NWR: Moving out of New York

Original post by curiousgeorge

Are any of you girls thinking about or are moving out of New York after your wedding. We are trying to decide if this is best. We are looking at other cities and my Fh can make the same amount of money he makes here and the houses are three times the size and half the price! The only thing is, there Is NO body, no friends, no family, just us, there is a possibility my family will gradually move south but not for another 2 years. But I will be able to have my children and stay at home with them and live such a comfortable life! Has any of you girls experienced this? Or are doing this? We are considering living just outside of Atlanta Georgia.

We are planning on moving to NC after our wedding. My family will not stay in ny forever, my parents are already looking to move to florida so I have nothing to lose!

We're moving to NC in the beginning of 08. This is one of the reasons we decided to have a smaller wedding. FH can transfer his job w/ the same pay so it's almost like why wouldn't we? The houses are amazing and I have no family in NY anymore, so there wasn't much of an incentive to stay...

Where in NC are you moving too!???

We're looking into Cary, Raleigh, and Wake Forest. It really depends on where FH could transfer.

We'll be moving to Chesapeake, VA!! We're planning on selling our co-op next spring and move next summer! FH already has a job offer there and we'll be closer to the FMIL who moved there over 2 1/2 years ago. Every time we visit we just love it!

can't leave NY.... that would be like growing coconuts in wisconsin.... we're from 2 immgrant families, and wouldn't be comfortable in slower-moving areas devoid of multi-cultural neighborhoods.....

The only place in the US we could possibly be comfortable is boston. Other than that, no way...

depending on how far south you go..it only gets more expensive

in FL ( where im from) the cost of living is just as much as it is in NY..only with lower taxes..my mom has a 3-2 house that is worth over $525,000..she bought it 6 years ago for $145,000 and after the hurricanes the prices skyrocketed..it is a total sellers market right now and will be for a few years..the central parts of florida are whats cheap..south florida just got so crowded so fast

as for NC..ive heard that certain parts there it is hard for new commers to get a job..my sisters best friend moved to NC from NY about a year and a half ago and they are moving again because it was hard for her husband to get work being that he was a 'yankee' parts of NC..( and most of the south)..are into their small towns and not happy that because its so cheap that all the northeners are moving there..and if you dont have family and friends..depending on your personality..it might be hard to make them

we moved to Charlotte, NC right after the wedding. we love it here! its cheaper, cleaner, and everything is new and pretty. we are renting for now and saving for a house. plus, i am going to school here at UNCC for my masters in school counseling. its close to impossible to get a job as a school counselor on LI, so we knew we would be moving for my job eventually.

\

I am also looking into moving to NC. I have a masters in school counseling, i graduated last may and i still dont have a job. I hear that it is about 200 applicants to the 10 positions available on long island. In fact, the only people who have a job as a school counselor are the people who left NY (with the execption of maybe like 4 from my graduating class of 15). Its crazy and frustrating.

I am so tempted to leave. But as curiousgeorge said, no friends, no family, there. so torn .. especially after just spending easter with my family taht is only an hour away!.

there are so many people moving here that the schools are becoming way over crowded...they are building new schools left and right, so there are MANY jobs in education here. plus, in NC with an MA in school counseling you can become a LPC (licensed professional counselor) after passing a test and a certain number of hours of supervision and with an LPC you can do private practice counseling. its a great place to live with a counseling degree! as far as family and friends, we are lucky that we have a family that we were close with in NY move here first, so they helped us settle into our new life here. i have made friends at work and school and feel very comfortable here. NY is only 1 hour and 20 mins by flight and once i am done with school and working a real job, i will be able to visit my family on LI more often. honestly, if anyone is considering moving, just check it out. its not for everyone, but if its for you its a smart decision!

I wouldn't have minded moving, but my FH has a business here and would have to start over somewhere else. We just bought a house here, so it looks like we won't be leaving until FH is ready to retire.

we have a house in Connecticut...we bought it before we were married-

We still have our house but we temporarily live in GA- love it here- but we dont have friends/family...it's not easy ...BUT, with DHS job right now, he travels a lot-so for the next year we will be in many different cities, and hopefully we will move for good in a few years-

FH just got a job with GE so it looks like we could be basically anywhere. he has to be at one of the big plants for his first two rotations. Our choices are Albany, NY (I am praying for this one), Greenville, SC, and Houston, TX. So, there is no way we still be on LI.
