Hey all, so while I was getting my eye exam (first one in 10 years), they put the anesthesia drops in and I started to feel nauseous, then light-headed, until finally I felt the tingling sensations in my fingers bad enough that I couldn't bend them. I was about to pass out. The only other time this has happened was when I gave blood. Has this ever happened to anyone before?

Oh, I'm sorry! What did the doctor say when you told him this? Did he/she say that some people have this reaction?

No, she just said that some people have occular something that the minute anything touches their eye, they're blood pressure drops significantly.

This happens to me every time I go to the allergist. No particular reason why, I went through a ton of tests the first two times it happened. It's like a switch in my brain.
I wouldn't worry too much unless your doctor can figure out a reason why.

Sounds crazy, but I pass out very easily - Dr's have told me it is just mind over matter. I know that it is a metal thing too, because if I don't think about it, I'm okay. Once that numbing sensation occurs, however, it takes alot for me to remain conscious. Embarassing, but I almost passed out in the dentist's office a couple of weeks ago - FH makes fun of me! Believe it or not, I know other people that have similar reactions to needles, novacaine, anesthesia (local), etc.

Were you having the glaucoma test? I have fainted from the glaucoma test where they numb your eye and touch it with the instrument. The puff-of-air test doesn't bother me. It was wierd, I was in the examination chair with my face on the thing at the eye dr., then I felt funny, and the next thing I knew I was in a regular chair across the room being handed a cup of water with people running around all worried about me. The eye dr. told me that like 1 in 500 people have the problem that they faint when something is going to touch their eye and the eye is numb. A guy I used to work with had the same problem, too. Apparently it is more common in men.
I only get the puff-of-air glaucoma test now and I have not had a problem, though I am still always nervous at the eye doctor!
Also, my blood pressure is normally pretty low.

How amazing! That's exactly what part of the exam I was going through!!!!!!! She wrote down on my chart to never give the anesthesia again and I hadn't even been nervous at all even sitting in the waiting room so it was so out of nowhere that it came on!

Re: NWR- passing out
I used to work in a eye docs office and that happened sometimes. Nothing to worry about! But good to remember if you ever use a different eye doc!

Re: NWR- passing out
Never during an eye exam but I use to get dizzy and passing out spells years ago...I went to my cardiologist and turned out I had a very low electrolyte level....now I have a glass a day of gatorade to bring it back up and I am 100% ok
