NWR: Pets vs. children

Original post by marrymybestfriend

I was just involved in a debate at work and I wanted to see how you all felt about it. someone mentioned that their boyfriend was gonna be a great dad because he absolutely loves his cats. so I said that you CAN NOT compare babies/kids to animals. This started a huge debate.

First off I would l like to say that these are my opinions, and I hope I don’t offend anyone

I actually think that it’s ridiculous to think this way. my kids mother HATED animals. She used to kick our cat, and throw it across the room… however, she is an excellent mother. My old roommate once kicked my puppy that I brought home, because it pissed on the carpet, but yet he is AMAZING with kids!! as most of you know, I cant stand our cats, and I was looking to get rid of them recently. At the same time, I like to think, and get told quite often, that I am a great father to my 2 boys. I don’t think that you can compare the 2. I think there is a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE difference between children and pets.

What do you guys think??

All I have to say is:

YOU WILL NOT GET ARRESTED FOR PUTTING A DOG IN A CRATE!!! Try putting a child in one.

And yes, I do want children. LOL

Both animals and children, especially babies are defenseless and depend on you completely to take care of them and love you unconditionally, therefore I can see people making the comparison. I have a dog and me and fh treat him like a child. He's great with him and I do think he will be a great father but not just because of how he is with my dog but for many reasons. My dog is part of the family.

ITA!!! FH & I treat our dog better than a lot of people treat there children...

ITA too!!

Well I'm going to be one of those people that says my dogs are my kids...for those who think it's ok to 'kick' or hit or get rid of their animals....i think that shows poor character and i don't see how someone so cold hearted can be a good parent...just my opinion....

I also agree, I don't think that people should 'kick' any living thing especially an innocent animal!

I think men and pets are more comparable than children and pets

I will stand up for the boys and say that's NOT true

Children and pets are not the same. If your dog dies unless this dog rescued you from the middle a river- you will get over it. if your child dies your life is changed forever. I know this is an extreme example but I some people are toooooooo attached to their pets.

(I don't have/want/like pets so maybe i am a bit scewed.)

i totally agree with this. it kinda freaks me out when people are overly obsessed with their pets.

I dont think its fair to say that someone is 'too attached' to their pets. They are living creatures who people chose to bring into their life and care for. They love unconditionally, they protect you, and they become a part of the family. If youre not going to get attached at all or just see them as dispensable then their is no reason in getting one at all.

i understand what you're saying... however there's a difference between loving your pet... and revolving your entire life around a pet. i think thats what she meant by what she said... because i totally agree

if you choose to get rid of an animal...that gives you poor character??? i JUST posted a listing on craigslist for someone to adopt my cat. i have poor character? i actuallythink it's the smart thing to do, because the cat and i dont vibe. so let me give it away to someone who will care for it more then i will.

that being said... i dont believe i'm 'cold-hearted'... and i actually think i am an EXCELLENT father to my 2 children
