NWR: Pets vs. children

Original post by marrymybestfriend

I was just involved in a debate at work and I wanted to see how you all felt about it. someone mentioned that their boyfriend was gonna be a great dad because he absolutely loves his cats. so I said that you CAN NOT compare babies/kids to animals. This started a huge debate.

First off I would l like to say that these are my opinions, and I hope I don’t offend anyone

I actually think that it’s ridiculous to think this way. my kids mother HATED animals. She used to kick our cat, and throw it across the room… however, she is an excellent mother. My old roommate once kicked my puppy that I brought home, because it pissed on the carpet, but yet he is AMAZING with kids!! as most of you know, I cant stand our cats, and I was looking to get rid of them recently. At the same time, I like to think, and get told quite often, that I am a great father to my 2 boys. I don’t think that you can compare the 2. I think there is a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE difference between children and pets.

What do you guys think??

Well I'm going to be one of those people that says my dogs are my kids...for those who think it's ok to 'kick' or hit or get rid of their animals....i think that shows poor character and i don't see how someone so cold hearted can be a good parent...just my opinion....

if you choose to get rid of an animal...that gives you poor character??? i JUST posted a listing on craigslist for someone to adopt my cat. i have poor character? i actuallythink it's the smart thing to do, because the cat and i dont vibe. so let me give it away to someone who will care for it more then i will.

that being said... i dont believe i'm 'cold-hearted'... and i actually think i am an EXCELLENT father to my 2 children

I don't think its poor character to get rid of a pet. People do it all the time...

i think its poor character for people with 16posts & and really no info about themselves to get on here and purposely try to cause drama...just my opinion...

what in the hell are you guys talking about??? lol

omg lol...tthat was aimed towards the loser who basically called you cold-hearted

im a cold hearted snake... uh oh...

i wish i knew the rest of the words to that paula abdul song

I don't think pets and children are comparable. But I think sometimes personalities can have to do with a person being particularly good with both.

If a person is nuturing in general and loves both children & animals, then yes, maybe if they are very good with pets then they could potentially be very good with children-- but nothing is really an exact predictor of another.

However, it's a hard statement to make that someone who is 'good' with animals will be 'good' with children for a few reasons: most importantly children and animals are not the same. They both have physical and emotional needs, but the child's needs last longer, they are not self sustaining by nature like animals are, and they develop deeper and long lasting emotional connections. A child generally also has higher financial needs for instance. Also, some people don't like pets and some people don't like children.

So yes, I think you are correct!

Well said.... ITA You cannot compare the two.

omg, ***, lmaooo

well i didnt read through all the posts but seems the consensus is that treatment of pets dont coincide with how you will treat your kids.

well there's a couple of things here,

marrymybestfriend...even though you 'hate' your cats, would you necessarily want to see them hurt or intentionally hurt them...i doubt it (hopefully)...so even though you are a muchhhhhhh better dad than you are pet owner/caretaker, your personality says that you arent intentionally a malicious person; on the other hand if someone was to intentionally hurt their pets, etc...I definately thnk that would corrolate with how they were as a parent and somewhat dictate how they treated their kids.

ok, wait, i just read the op again, lol...so idunooo, if she used to hurt the cat and stuff and shes a great mom, who knows...i guess forget about everything i just wrote.

I dont think its fair to say that someone is 'too attached' to their pets. They are living creatures who people chose to bring into their life and care for. They love unconditionally, they protect you, and they become a part of the family. If youre not going to get attached at all or just see them as dispensable then their is no reason in getting one at all.

i understand what you're saying... however there's a difference between loving your pet... and revolving your entire life around a pet. i think thats what she meant by what she said... because i totally agree

Well I dont think you should revolve your life around your children either honestly. You still should be able to live your life regardless. There are just as many people who are 'obsessed' with their children as there are those who are obsessed with their pets. However, different strokes for different folks. I love my animals as though they were human and some people dont. Thats their business. 8-)
