I was just involved in a debate at work and I wanted to see how you all felt about it. someone mentioned that their boyfriend was gonna be a great dad because he absolutely loves his cats. so I said that you CAN NOT compare babies/kids to animals. This started a huge debate.
First off I would l like to say that these are my opinions, and I hope I don’t offend anyone
I actually think that it’s ridiculous to think this way. my kids mother HATED animals. She used to kick our cat, and throw it across the room… however, she is an excellent mother. My old roommate once kicked my puppy that I brought home, because it pissed on the carpet, but yet he is AMAZING with kids!! as most of you know, I cant stand our cats, and I was looking to get rid of them recently. At the same time, I like to think, and get told quite often, that I am a great father to my 2 boys. I don’t think that you can compare the 2. I think there is a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE difference between children and pets.
What do you guys think??

I totally agree with you. I don't think there's any way to compare a child with an animal.
My biggest reason for that: an animal can fend for itself for a day..two days even depending how much food you leave. (Even longer depending what type of animal it is). You can't LEAVE a child for any amount of time. It's a 24 hour dedication. Animals- you feed, play w/ once in awhile, take to the vet...and can ignore them if you're not in the moood to play. You can't ignore a baby!
Agreed!

Re: NWR: Pets vs. children
Ok You all are going to hate me...lol. I don't think good pet owners make bad parents or vice versa. However, I have had a chihuahua for 9 years and he was a surprise from my mom. It was the last gift she gave to me before she passed away. So I have an extremely special bond with yes my baby! He is and always will be my little angel. I love animals to death and in my next life I want to dedicate it to only animals especially dogs. I think that certain people have different bonds and feel differently about people vs. animals. I think there are some lousy parents out there (I'm a HS teacher) and always say they wouldn't even treat a dog that way. I think it's the way you were raised to value and like certain things. My Fh loves dogs, but was never allowed one as a kid. That doesn't mean he hates all dogs, it just means he is not used to it. I think people have different priorities and I also know many people who can't have children who adopt pets, even though I know plenty of children need to be adopted...I still feel that as humans we have the ability to control in more way then one when and when not to have a baby. If more parents did that then, maybe there would be better parents and less arguments over people who love their pets.

I agree with you. I know people can love their pets as much as they would a family member lets say but they are NOT PEOPLE!! This may be a little off on a tangent but I can't stand when people act like their dogs are human. My friends own a restaurant and her husband once had to ask a person to leave cause she had a dog sitting on her lap while she was eating at the restaurant!
ME TOO!!! The trend nowadays is dogs are increasingly becoming as important as humans. I hate when people bring their dirty dogs into any public store. ESPECIALLY supermarkets, drug stores, or ANY TYPE of store. I don't want your dog sitting in a cart where I'm going to be putting my food and medicine. Love how people bring their dogs into stores and leave their children in the car
I love when people bring their dogs into my store. It means I get to play with them and get a tiny moment of joy. I love my animals with all my heart . Id do just about anything for them. Ive always been an animal person and tend to have more respect for them than I do most humans.

Re: NWR: Pets vs. children
I kinda agree with this & I kind of don't....
some people just arent animal people..they dont like animals at all..but they are still great parents...like my mom, she is not an animal person...she will barely even pet my dog...but, she is a great mother!
however, my FH is amazing with our dog...he is always on the floor playing with her, makes sure she has fresh food and water, takes her on a walk every single day (rain, shine, snow)...and just babies her...i know he will be the same with children, its just who he is...
and, anyone that purposely hurts an animal to be mean & cruel...in my opinion..shouldnt have kids either....animals have feelings just like humans do..

Re: NWR: Pets vs. children
pets & children are two completely different things. i used to think FH would be a great dad because he is such a great cat dad, but then my brother had 3 kids.
FH is great with the kids but kids talk back. kids want to be entertained much more then a cat wants to be entertained.
i think its easier to take care of the kids because once they are a certain age you can reason & bargain with them.

Well I'm going to be one of those people that says my dogs are my kids...for those who think it's ok to 'kick' or hit or get rid of their animals....i think that shows poor character and i don't see how someone so cold hearted can be a good parent...just my opinion....

Re: NWR: Pets vs. children
ITA. My fh treats his dogs better than people sometimes. I treat his dogs well like dogs... I have 2 cats and I treat them like cats. The way we treat our pets should not reflect how we would treat our kids.
However, I have been told I am amazing with kids. And I think FH will be a great Daddy b/c he has pratice from his nieces and nephews. And his mentality is still somewhat of a kid.
People crack me up... I swear....

Re: NWR: Pets vs. children
Both animals and children, especially babies are defenseless and depend on you completely to take care of them and love you unconditionally, therefore I can see people making the comparison. I have a dog and me and fh treat him like a child. He's great with him and I do think he will be a great father but not just because of how he is with my dog but for many reasons. My dog is part of the family.

I will stand up for the boys and say that's NOT true
Children and pets are not the same. If your dog dies unless this dog rescued you from the middle a river- you will get over it. if your child dies your life is changed forever. I know this is an extreme example but I some people are toooooooo attached to their pets.
(I don't have/want/like pets so maybe i am a bit scewed.)

I dont think its fair to say that someone is 'too attached' to their pets. They are living creatures who people chose to bring into their life and care for. They love unconditionally, they protect you, and they become a part of the family. If youre not going to get attached at all or just see them as dispensable then their is no reason in getting one at all.
