I was just involved in a debate at work and I wanted to see how you all felt about it. someone mentioned that their boyfriend was gonna be a great dad because he absolutely loves his cats. so I said that you CAN NOT compare babies/kids to animals. This started a huge debate.
First off I would l like to say that these are my opinions, and I hope I don’t offend anyone
I actually think that it’s ridiculous to think this way. my kids mother HATED animals. She used to kick our cat, and throw it across the room… however, she is an excellent mother. My old roommate once kicked my puppy that I brought home, because it pissed on the carpet, but yet he is AMAZING with kids!! as most of you know, I cant stand our cats, and I was looking to get rid of them recently. At the same time, I like to think, and get told quite often, that I am a great father to my 2 boys. I don’t think that you can compare the 2. I think there is a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE difference between children and pets.
What do you guys think??

ita i hate when ppl say pets are like kids there is no way in hell u can compare the two it takes way more time and love to raise a child iam a mother of two and it is hard work but i am a darn good mother even though i became a mother at a young age yes 14 and 16 and i had a cat but all i think with the cat was feed it and change its liter box .With kids you feed them change them make sure they go to school put them to sleep keep them clean put clothes on them etc.so no i dont think pets and kids should be in the same boat

I totally agree with you. I don't think there's any way to compare a child with an animal.
My biggest reason for that: an animal can fend for itself for a day..two days even depending how much food you leave. (Even longer depending what type of animal it is). You can't LEAVE a child for any amount of time. It's a 24 hour dedication. Animals- you feed, play w/ once in awhile, take to the vet...and can ignore them if you're not in the moood to play. You can't ignore a baby!

Re: NWR: Pets vs. children
I don't think pets and children are comparable. But I think sometimes personalities can have to do with a person being particularly good with both.
If a person is nuturing in general and loves both children & animals, then yes, maybe if they are very good with pets then they could potentially be very good with children-- but nothing is really an exact predictor of another.
However, it's a hard statement to make that someone who is 'good' with animals will be 'good' with children for a few reasons: most importantly children and animals are not the same. They both have physical and emotional needs, but the child's needs last longer, they are not self sustaining by nature like animals are, and they develop deeper and long lasting emotional connections. A child generally also has higher financial needs for instance. Also, some people don't like pets and some people don't like children.
So yes, I think you are correct!

I definitely think human beings and animals are two completely different things!!!!! I absolutely loathe all animals and I wouldn't mind a world with no animals; however, I adore babies and children and the miracle of life in general. And I hope that people would feel differently about their own son or daughter than they would about their pet!

i mean i guess i could see how she is seeing some qualities in him that would make him a good father...like nuturing etc but overall i think they are totally different. i dont know if you can say just bc he is good with pets that he will be a good father or just bc someone hates animals that they wont be a good parent...its very different.

I agree with you. I know people can love their pets as much as they would a family member lets say but they are NOT PEOPLE!! This may be a little off on a tangent but I can't stand when people act like their dogs are human. My friends own a restaurant and her husband once had to ask a person to leave cause she had a dog sitting on her lap while she was eating at the restaurant!

ME TOO!!! The trend nowadays is dogs are increasingly becoming as important as humans. I hate when people bring their dirty dogs into any public store. ESPECIALLY supermarkets, drug stores, or ANY TYPE of store. I don't want your dog sitting in a cart where I'm going to be putting my food and medicine. Love how people bring their dogs into stores and leave their children in the car

oh god you hit the nail on the head here. i used to be a big animal lover. i was a member of the Bronx zoo, i went to school for zooligy, i wanted to work with animals. but recently i realized how much i cant stand domestic animals. having a dog can completely alter your entire life. having to be home for the dog... having to pay for the boarding of your dog if you go away... the hair everywhere... etc. i always thought that i would have a dog when i was married... but after hearing/seeing what some of my friends go through with their dogs... NO THANKS!!! i have suddenly lost all interest in dogs

I hate dogs lol. I am terrified of them, I have like a medically prescribed phobia of dogs. (Have not really been prescribed, just trying to emphasize my fear!)
