NWR: Question about Gynos...

NWR: Question about Gynos...

Is it normal to call your gyno's office and tell them you don't feel well and need to be seen this week and have them basically say no? I ALWAYS have a problem getting an appointment other than my annual. I don't know what they want me to do when I'm not feeling well - wait weeks or months to get an appointment?

That really *****. there is no way they can fit you in. I mean how are you supposed to get diagnosed otherwise if there was something wrong?

Yes, I think that's pretty normal. Most of their appointments revolve around pregnancy checks. When is the soonest they could see you though? They should be able to squeeze you in within the next week or two..

I think it's an insurance thing cause I go through the same thing. One time I just felt like something wasn't right and wanted to be seen...they wouldn't give me an appt until I actually literally saw something and then I called them back and then they said to come in.

Meanwhile, what I 'saw' maybe could have been prevented had they seen me earlier. Granted it ended up being no big deal, but still, the anxiety could have been avoided, but I do believe it's an insurance thing. Just like for your annual, your annual visit won't be covered unless it outside of a year since your last visit. Like if your last visit was 6/3/07, you can't be seen again until 6/4/08.

Demand to be seen. Let them know it's an emergency. Leave a message for the Dr. to call you back to discuss what is wrong... most Dr's will call after hours to discuss health concerns with patients.

Hope you feel better.

ETA: If all else fails, go to your regular Dr. and let them assess the situation until you can get in to see your gyno.

I don't think it is an insurance thing - but I don't know why they're doing this. If a person doesn't feel well, I really dont' see how they can turn them away if a person is already a patient. I called and said 'I'm in pain, does Dr. XXXX have an emergency appointments this week?' The woman flat out just said no. Then she said she'd call me back later.

I think I need a new doc

ETA: I also don't think it's about pregnancy checks - my gyno does not practice obstetrics.

That shouldn't be the case at all. If you are not feeling well, they should see you - period. Insurance only defines the annuals .. they can see you as a well woman exam, which is your yearly, or as a primary care / medical, which would be if you have a yeast infection or another issue. Mine has never had a problem with this. Sorry you have to deal with this! When you tell them, listen, I do not feel well and I want to be seen, what do they say? Can you leave a message for the doctor at least to discuss the issue - maybe then you can tell her that her front office girls were basically telling you there is no place to fit you in?

If you are in pain, they can't just say no!! I would seriously demand to speak to your doctor. If he can't see you, maybe he could prescribe something over the phone. That's BS though..
Sooo sorry! Hope you feel better!!

Thanks! I really think I need a new doctor. This is not the first time this has happened to me. I like my doctor when I actually get in to see her, but I don't think it's normal to not have emergency appointments, especially when your practice is strictly gynecology.

I switched GYN's becuase of that. I had a UTI and was in a TON of pain and they wouldn't see me.

If you are in pain and you need to get in to see them they should have emergency appt.'s avaiblable.

I love my GYN but sadly he doesn't take my insurance and he's in Queens and I'm moving to LI so I have to leave him
