I know this isnt wedding related, but I kinda needed to vent!
well i have been at my job for 2 years now. the money is AWFUL. i live in huntington and work in hauppauge. i like my job, but ive been promised soooo many things, and nothing seems to ever come through for me. i work really hard and both of my bosses gush over me all the time, but they certainly dont gush my paycheck!! not only that, i am constantly being used as the scapegoat (did i spell that right?>?) for them, and then they yell at me. i dont like how they talk to me or anyone else, and it makes going to work unpleasent. OK. so I got offered a job to work for a small cosmetic company, to be the account executive. (the owner is a friend of my FSIL) so the owner is amazing. a really great guy, with might i add make up that i have become totally addicted to - that i have been using - BEFORE - he offered me the job.
so with this new oppertunity, i would have to commute into manhattan. he has offered me about 10K more than what i am making now, plus commision. am i crazy to be doing this and taking this job this close to my wedding??!!
i am so sorry this is so long. i just needed to vent.
-thanks!! Jennifer

Re: NWR - Should I take this job offer??
I say GO FOR IT! I change jobs 6 weeks prior to my wedding! And I am so glad I did! Its been a tough transition but I am soooo much happier!
I did the commute to NYC for 3 years and actually I liked it, but we bought a house further out and I realized I wouldnt like th new commute!
Huntington is the same distance to NYC that my line was (babylon) it would take me an hour and a half door to door! it sounds like a lot but its a nice way to unwind and relax after the day! I found that by the time I got home, no matter how bad my day was, I wasnt wound up over it when I got home! THe commute is totally do able and you get used to it! However remember that that 10K raise is no longer that big once you venture into NYC! First you have the train which in your case is 226 a month, then if there is any parking fee, subway even if you take it only in bad weather.... Now the raise is closer to about 6500! Just something to consider!
GOOD LUCK!

I'd go for it considering you don't like your present job and your commute is not bad at all. I also work in the city in midtown, one block from Penn Station. I work in 32nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. You will love the area because you can shop like crazy......stores everywhere especially on 5th avenue...mind you after the wedding though...don't forget to the wedding budget.... I always think of the wedding budget and then said....if I can spend all that money for one day...what's wrong in getting this, that will bring so much happiness for the times that I wear it...It works every time.... Good Luck and keep us posted. Just make sure you are able to get time off for your honeymoon and you are going to be very happy not having to face your rude bosses, something I'd not take from anyone. So maybe we can all get together and go for lunch...

I know the money sounds good, but weigh all the aspects. Commuting can be very annoying. You are going to be a newlywed and spending a lot of time back and forth to the city. Where do you live now? I used to commute. Its not that bad it just gets to you sometimes. The money is to be made in manhattan, that is true. Someone mentioned the vacation time also-that is a great point-make sure you can get off for your honeymoon. If the offer is that good, take it. What does FH think?

Good luck Jennifer! I hope you are happy with whatever you decide. My 2 cents, for what it is worth--I commuted into the city for over a year, and took over a $10,000 cut to work on Long Island. The commute was 'life sucking,' as my FI called it. Unless your boss is very understanding of train schedules, it is very easy to miss trains if you have to stay even 5 mins late. If I had a dollar for every time I arrived at the platform only to see the train doors shut, and have to wait another hour for a different train! That said, I worked in an industry that was very long hours, and my bosses were not understanding about train delays, etc. Trains are delayed almost every time it rains. Forget about snow on the tracks. Anyway, do what is right for you, but I had almost no life when I worked in there--leaving on the 6AM train, getting home at 8 or 9PM, too exhausted to do anything other than go to bed. I don't regret leaving--the opportunities here are less, as is the pay, but my quality of life is definitely better. Good luck!
