I'm a caseworker for children in foster care. Not quite CPS, but I deal a lot with them.

Thanks ladies.

I will turn to you gals tomorrow from school. I just can't help this helpless feeling I've got. If I had information I might be able to wrap my brain around it and breathe.

How tied are a teachers hands when it comes to a student who should receive intensive psychological help at a facility such as South Oakes, for example?

Could you be a little more clear? Are you talking about admitting someone yourself? Or working with the student while he/she is in South Oaks?

Apparently CPS was there holding the mom's hand to make the call but it was full. Now it turns out there may be a bed available. The father is putting the breaks on the whole thing. This morning, once again, the dad had to carry him up the stairs to the door. Today he just curled up in the fetal position and wouldn't get up.
HELP!?!

The problem is, as long as mom and dad have parental rights, they get the last say. So honestly, I don't think you are required to be the one to call.

***Someone correct me if I'm wrong.***

I also THINK that if the child is a danger to himself or others the school MIGHT be able to go above the parents head and have him admitted. But if not then like she said, the parents have final say.

Hi- I have a question for you girls that are Social Workers or studying to become one....do you know if there are jobs in that area? I have a Masters in School counseling and havent been able to find a job. I'm toying with the idea of possibly going back for Social Work but want to make sure I have a job at the end of it. Thanks so much.

I would wait to go back to school to see if the economy pics up. In the meantime i would look for jobs as a caseworker. I have my MA in forensic psych but am working as a sw (even thuogh i've told them a million times i dont have my MSW).

Also, IMO i would go back to school to become a Mental Health Counselor. Hofstra has a counseling program and its a general program but you then can pick a specific track, school, mhc, or geriatric. If you do MHC chances are you'll be able to transfer many more credits over then if u got for ur MSW.

Or think about going back for school psychology. I'm applying to hofstra's counseling program now and a few school psych programs for a 2nd masters also

I agree. I'm also MA in forensic psych. My official title is 'therapeutic caseworker,' but I'm basically a social worker. And I definitely agree about the MHC license instead of MSW. Adelphi also has a program, which of course they didn't implement until I was already half-way done with my MA.

Let's see:
Filthy living conditions
Horrendus sleeping arrangements
Fetal position once he's carried into school.

Is there really nothing I can do?

You said CPS was already called right?
As far as i know it's pretty much in their hands right now. I would just try to stay in touch with the worker as much as you can (also get the supervisors name if possible cuz workers come and go like you wouldn't believe).
I would also check with the nurse to make sure all his physicals and stuff are up to date to make sure the parent isn't neglecting that also. The CPS worker MIGHT have done this already but also MIGHT not. Depends on if its a good worker.

This is what I'm thinking..if things are so bad and CPS is already involved CPS should be either removing him from parents custody and making decisions based on his best interests....I'm assuming you're his teacher? Maybe get the school social worker involved...
