NWR-Vegas and The Grand Canyon..

So next month we're heading to Vegas with friends, they are getting married there, and we are all very interested in going to the Grand Canyon. I've been to Vegas before, and we never made it to the GC, but this time we are determined to go. Has anyone taken the trip from Vegas to GC? Ive been online all morning looking it up, Its a LONG drive to the South Rim. The West Rim is closer but doesn't seem as popular as the National Park in the South and North Rims (the 14 mile unpaved road isnt all that appealing either) We are renting a car by the way. Has anyone driven or taken one of the tours? The plane and helicopter tours are too expensive and not at all appealing to us....

Re: NWR-Vegas and The Grand Canyon..

Some friends of mine went last year for a bachelorette party (about 5 girls) and they did the drive. It was loooooong and I don't think they did a helicopter tour or anything. They stayed about 2 hours or so and then headed back to vegas.

Dunno if that's much help or not. I just remember them saying that it was a really long drive (5 hour each way I think).

The Grand Canyon is definitely a LONG drive. You spend the whole day doing that--driving there, about 2 hours or so at the actual place and driving back. Maybe you should stay overnight by the Grand Canyon to make it worth the trip since you guys are driving yourselves there.

Re: NWR-Vegas and The Grand Canyon..

We went to the Grand Canyon last year. We didn't do the drive from Vegas - we flew into Phoenix and drove from there. If I were you, I would definetly stay overnight. The South Rim is the place to go. I have to say it was one of THE most beautiful places I've ever been. It blew me away. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much. You should stay overnight so you can try to see the sunset over the canyon - breathtaking!!!

Re: NWR-Vegas and The Grand Canyon..

Thank You Ladies! We wanted to go last time, but go so caught up in trying to do everything we didn't go. FH and his buddy will be doing the driving, one going and one coming back. We are staying at the Signature @ The MGM, so even if I suggested staying overnight, no one would want to knowing that we have rooms at the Signature. We are definately going this time around. Last time we went to Red Rock, Valley of Fire, Lake Mead, and Damn Dam (LOL) We flew over the GC and I was in awe...I could imagine seeing it up close!
