i was at school... found out on the way to lunch... they didn't cancel classes cuz they wanted life to go on as normally as possible (yeah, that works when half of the students are from the dc area, and a large portion are from NY/NJ)...

I just went to class and we talked about it though... then i proceeded to sit in my dorm room and watch the tv for the rest of the night... that and freak out cuz my mom misinformed me that my uncle worked in the pentagon (he in fact worked in crystal city...)

I was just about to leave to go to class at Nassau and my grandma called and told us one plane flew into the trade center. So i stayed home and watched it all on TV. Then ran to go donate blood.

I found out in the car on the way to work here in CA when I turned on the radio and they said, New York as we know it is now gone!!! I thought I lost my whole family and all of my friends. It took a few hysterical minutes yelling at the radio- 'What happened' and me almost hitting th car in front of me for me to calm down enough to hear what actually happened. I couldn't reach anyone in NY and was very worried about my sister who worked downtown. I then had to go to my middle school where I am the only counselor to console, calm and counsel over 700 terrifed children and their parents while I was quietly panicking inside. It was the worst day of my life and yet, I know how fortunate I really am. I have never taken my family for granted since that day.

its so weird. i pass by there all the time to go to my movie theater and its so weird. i cant expalin it. i actually went to the city a few days after the 11th ( iwas still living on long island at this time) and the ONLY thing i can rememer is the smell. when we were right there it smelt so horribly, i cant expalin it. i swear. also, all the soot on all the awnings. it was horrible. i wont ever forget that . the thing i remember most besides the smell was this one wall with MILLIONS of posters of 'missing' people. i wanted to take a pic to remmber it, but i didnt want to be disrespectful . that ws teh moment it really hit me.

I had just started my internship at a Middle School, and we were going into a meeting with the principal and 2 assistant principals, and the secretary told me what happened. We thought it was a 'plane crash' not intentenional, then when the 2nd one hit, I was just giong into the meeting, and I told them what happend, and suggested we put the meeting off, which we did, and it was frantic the rest of the day, dealing with the students, staff and parents.
I still remember that 1st 1/2 hour when we thought it was an accident, and how could that have happened, then our view TOTALLY changed.

I was at work in NYC. I heard it on the radio and was completely shocked. I tried to contact friends as a couple I was unsure of exactly where they worked to make sure everyone was okay. A couple of co-workers actually saw the first tower fall since we had a perfect view down 6th Ave.

I wound up walking home that day, or at least to Brooklyn. It was so sad.

I had stayed at FH's over the weekend and was coming out of the subway on West 3rd to go to class when I saw a plane flying really low overhead. I thought that it was a little weird but just kept walking. I picked up my roommate for class and as we were heading across the street someone said class was cancelled because a plane had just crashed into WTC. A few minutes later, we saw the 2nd crash. It was so awful. I headed back out to LI as soon as they started trains running out of Penn later that night.

I was at work at the hospital and I went down to the x-ray dept. Because they have a TV and saw what was going on I could not believe it. All of a sudden the hospital went into alert for survivors and we were not allowed to leave. I will always remember that day.

I was at work, about 1 block from the WTC, stuck on the 28th floor of my building.

Re: NWR: Where Were You on 9/11?

I was at work in Midtown in the 50's we all were watching TV when we saw the second one hit, we all got phone calls when the first one got hit. When the second one got hit, ppl thought they were looping the first crash and then we see its not a loop at all....They weren't allowing anyone to leave unless they left with someone, so me and my friend walked, she walked to the Willamsburg Bridge, and I walked over the 34th and 8th where FH office was at that time, they wanted to put us up in a hotel, but I refused to stay in the city, so we heard penn was open and took any train to get us out of the city.....FH hadn't seen any images, so when we got home he saw the news and it was strange to see him react so late after we all reacted you know

Re: NWR: Where Were You on 9/11?

First plane hit I was probably buying a muffin. When I got upstairs to my desk there was a message from my friend telling me about the plane hitting.
As I was listening to the voicemail my boss came running out of our CEO's office screaming to get in the office to see what was going on - my heart just sank.
I was only working there 3-4 months and was just so upset/confused/uncomfortable.
I wound up walking to FMIL's job and waiting for the F train to come back up.

I was in FL with my mom. We had to take the Greyhound bus home. It was weird how it didnt really sink in until I was home.

My father led the cleanup of groud zero, for bovis lend lease constuction...i would go to the site to meet him so he could take a break from what he was doing...my three brothers started working with him around the clock as well...i know it was an awful, tiresome and depressing time of their lives but my dad said he has never been involved in anything more meaninful. I get choked up thinking about that day all the time...we lost family friends, my friend lost her boyfriend (volunteer firefighter) and my coworker lost her son. I actually was in NY working at the time and sat with my coworker for hours watching the television and trying to understand what was happening... :(
