NWR: wisdom teeth removal

I'm getting my bottom 2 wisdom teeth out on saturday and I am scared! I don't handle doctors that well. What should I expect? I believe they are putting me out and I've never had an IV before!

I've never been knocked out - although I think I should have been for a dental implant. I've heard of people having almost no pain afterward. I had a really bad dentist do my wisdom tooth - so it HURT, but Advil works great for teeth pain. Don't worry, you'll be fine!

I had mine out.. they did give me an IV in my hand.. so I couldn't drive home.. you should bring someone with you.

It was not painful because I was asleep.. but when you wake up and go home it's very uncomfortable. They gave me tylenol with codeine.. I had to keep the gauze stuff in my mouth for the day.. and I took the codeine and just slept it off.

The next day I had pretty much soft stuff like jello..

I had top and bottoms done at the same time.. so maybe it's different but the stitches made it hard for me to completely open my mouth for awhile.

It's scarier than it seems.. and I am a HUGE baby.. I usually pass out when I give blood.. so I am not brave at all! You will totally be fine.. I promise

thank you!! I've had doctors ask me how I expect to give birth when I'm such a bad patient (aka wuss). Thanks for your response it made me feel better! FH is coming with me, again, because I am a wuss.

I had it done 4 1/2 years ago. It's ok. I had the IV put in and didn't feel a thing, but needed loads of vicodin after for a week. The only thing that bothered me was I have/had a terrible reaction when I am put to sleep. It takes me hours to wake up and I get sick to my stomach and vomit like 9 hours later. I knew that before going in but needed to get them removed. I am sure you will be fine it's quick and once they are out you will feel better. The IV is painless and they hook up your finger to a cardiac machine, at least they did for me. When you are done they wake you up, give you antibiotics and pain meds and that's it. I also had stiches that dissolve in your mouth so That was great, he never needed to take them out!

I had all four done at once. They knock you out with an IV in the hand, and you don't feel a thing. Packing stays in for a day, then you use a little squirty thing to wash them out as they heal. I had Vicodin which I didn't need. Motrin or Advil was enough, and only for a day or two. Just remember no smoking or drinking from straws! HTH Good Luck!

I was awake for mine. Be happy for that IV!!!!!!!! You will be sore after, and possibly swollen. I didn't get very swollen though. But they will give you some vicoden/demerol/or codine. You may be sore for a coupld days after depending on if they were impacted.

knocked out is the way to go!!! and when you get home, make sure you ice it 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off!! it really helps keep the swelling down.

I had one pulled last year, I didn't get put under, I only got novicane b/c I was afraid of anestesia (sp?). I felt nothing when the tooth was coming out, and had no pain after the novicane wore off.

If you have agood oral surgeon it should be a breeze. I had 3 removed all at once. My surgeon was amazing. Painkillers after and Viola! I was eating hard food that same evening

Re: NWR: wisdom teeth removal

i had it done in october - it was horrible - one word for you - PERCOCET-

mine were very impacted though - and the harder they are to get out, the worse the recovery is - i was super swollen had some bruising and it really s-u-c-k-e-d - i think i got it done on a friday and didnt go back to work until the following thursday - i have a pic i think, if you want to see how horrible i looked, i can FM you

i just am being honest - ppl said oh i had all 4 out and it was nothing - i had 3 out (2 bottom and 1 upper, i had the other upper tooth extracted a few years prior) and it was painful and i had a long recovery - but to be honest i slept almost the whole time and watched movies and ate macncheese and mashed potatos from kfc i had drugs thank god so i was good to go - i just was tired, sleepy and i looked like sh!t - after about 4 or 5 days i think i stopped with the percocet and just took OTC pain med and was fine....

and the IV was NOTHING! i passed out so fast that i barely remember it at all - i dont even remember coming home, although FH told me he had to practically carry me out and i was falling all over the place - the day of the surgery is nothing - you arent swollen yet, you are still groggy from the drugs, and you are still numb from novacaine - for me it was the 3rd day that was the worst because i was super swollen at that point and that is when i started turning yellow with bruises.....

so coming from someone who had a crappy experience i will tell you that you will survive it and you will be ok - just follow all the directions, take it easy and rest! good luck!!

Well having had both, delivery and wisdom tooth extraction .... I dunno which is worse
The extraction part didn't hurt, but I was in major pain for the next 3 days. He gave me 800mg of Motrin and I had to take 4 to get minor relief. So ask for the good drugs!!!
Oh and I didn't get the IV.
Good luck!

Re: NWR: wisdom teeth removal

I'm supposed to have all 4 of mine taken out and I've been putting it off for a LONG time now. I can't be put under because I'm terrified of it after my knee surgery experience....and I hate any surgery hence why I can't bring myself to get my wisdom teeth extracted.

I may not b the best person to give advice but here goes....It's natural to be afraid, just know that once they're out you won't have to deal with them ever again. That's what I keep trelling myself to get myself moving to do it.

Re: NWR: wisdom teeth removal

I had my top 2 out but they weren't impacted so it wasn't so bad. They gave me oxycotone and it made me so sick I couldn't take them. Thank god I got 3 different choppers from my registry, it's purely geriatric food for awhile. Thanks for all your help and honesty girls

I have a feeling this is the route it will go! They're pushing up against the other molars (like sideways) and the dentists said it's an accident waiting to happen. I kept imagining an emergency extraction a few days before my wedding which is how I was able to work up the courage to get them out this weekend! Thanks for the honesty nicole

Jess, the surgery itself is cake - you'll be fine! Once the IV is in, the next thing you know they are waking you up to tell you its done!

I won't lie. . mine were impacted so I had a rough couple days afterward too. I was in a lot of pain, but the doctor gave me vicodin and that helped.

Ice it like yelley said, and when you go to sleep that night, put a towel over your pillow - I drooled blood and ruined my pillows

You'll be fine! Just get the painkillers
