NWR:Controversial Topic-Do you mind this...

So at my office we are allowed to decorate for the holidays. Now just as in any office there are some people here that celebrate Christmas, Haunakka, Kwanza etc.

Now there is one person on my floor who is Catholic and placed a nativity scene by their desk..it is not exactly on their desk it is sitting on top of the filling cabinets that are right next to her desk. A person who sits near me was complaining before that she was not Catholic so that offends her. And she said that the person who put that up should take it down and just decorate for Christmas. I told her well you are Jewish should you and the rest of the people here who are Jewish take down their manurah's (sp? sorry)?

Then I said and also Christmas is also about Jesus and the birth not just about snowman and santa etc for some people...but they didnt like what i said

WOULD you take offense or what do you think??

I think that whatever your belief is, you should be able to display it and enjoy it. Whether it is a mennorah or a nativity set, it shouldn't matter. If the girl put the nativity set on the Jewish girls desk, then I can see her having a problem with it... however, if the company allos you to decorate, you should put up whatever decorations you use to celebrate your beliefs.

I think the girl who is offended is being a little dramatic.jmo

I would never take offense to anyones religious beliefs. That woman just sounds ignorant saying she should decorate with christmas stuff... HELLO that is what Christmas is all about!!!

I would probably feel a little uncomfortable if the office decorated for Christmas only (like if the boss did it, or whatever). However, this is one person decorating next to her own space, not the office manager decorating. Assuming that other people can freely decorate with their own religious decorations for whatever holiday (which it seems like they do), I wouldn't mind at all.

If someone in my apartment building put up a nativity thing on their door/window I wouldn't mind at all because it's their space. I have a menorah in my window. I admit it does bug me a little that the lobby of my apt building is decorated with LOTS of x-mas decorations and nothing for Chanukkah (since it's a common space, and decorated by the apartment manager for us), but I'm used to stuff like that.

I think that if other people have religious decorations up, she should be able to keep her religious decorations up.

BUT... if people are offended, maybe your office needs a new 'NO RELIGIOUS DECORATIONS' policy... it's not fair to discriminate one way or another, if she has to take down her Nativity, and people have up Menorahs they should have to take those down as well.

I'm not offended by religion at all. I think it's a wonderful thing that people are proud of their beliefs and if they want to decorate in a place where they have already been told it's okay to do so.. I think it's wonderful.

People seriously need to drink more if $hit like this really bothers them. I'm sorry, I hope that doesn't come off rude, but come on. I'm Jewish and last week they had a Christmas (not holiday), Christmas, mini-concert of carolers in the building lobby and gave out crhistmas cookies. No Hanukah cookies, no anything else, just christmas decorations and carols, etc. Do I give a rat's @ss?? No.

Please, it bothers me more that people choose to waste their time and energy being bothered by these things, maybe I'm insensitive, but whatever. Stop whining and just enjoy this time of year whatever and however you celebrate.

I don't know why people get offended. If there is a jewish person next to me who wants to put up a menorah then go right ahead and do so, why should someone not do something that means alot to them because of me I really don't get all of this, and know that some people infact do make a big deal out of it...someone celebrating something they believe in does not mean that its putting down all other beliefs, we should all do what is important to us. I think its more disrespectful towards the person to say that they shouldn't celebrate their holiday, we should accept everyone for what they are and that means their beliefs too.

exactly!! our office is very good...we have chanukkah and christmas decorations up. and the woman was only decorating near her own desk but the woman who sits near me is mad because everytime she goes to the bathroom she has to pass that other womans desk. but there are many people here who decorated for both chanukka and christmas

I think some people just take freedom of speech to the extreme! Why should your co-worker take down her decorations? Obviously the offended is too ignorant to realize that's what Christmas is to begin with! Why take offense to someone else's religion? NO offense to anyone, but I don't get why some people allow other people's religion to get to them!! If they're not imposing their religion on you, then who the hell cares?!?

i am not offended by those types of things- whoever wants to express how they feel then great as long as it is done in a non discriminating way- this is the holiday season and everyone has different types of religious decor hanging up which is wonderful- if she was passing by a church in a car or walking she would have came across that display not sure what her deal is

I wouldnt be offended at all. I'm Jewish and I used to work with a diverse group of people. I didn't tell them to take anything down. If they want to decorate their cubicle/desk however they want then thats fine with me.
Its really childish if people complain about small decorations in the office. Shouldnt they be working and not complaining?

I was going to say the same thing. If you drive down the street and see xmas decorations up, are you going to be offended? I love looking at xmas lights and trees, etc.

They should all be able to put up whatever they want. No one is telling her to accept Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior..so get over it.

If ppl start complaining- the office will institute a no decoration policy and everyone will lose out so they should all be quiet- haha.

Sounds like SOMEONE needs to pull the lost piece of the nativity set out of their ***... If it offends her, tell her to look the other way! Its not as if she's leading the office in a christmas prayer OR that she has a life size Jesus in the middle of the room OR that everyone else isnt allowed to express their holiday in their way! If the girl feels that strongly, she should bring in some religous decorations of her own to show her solidarity to her own religion! Tolerance, baby!
