So at my office we are allowed to decorate for the holidays. Now just as in any office there are some people here that celebrate Christmas, Haunakka, Kwanza etc.
Now there is one person on my floor who is Catholic and placed a nativity scene by their desk..it is not exactly on their desk it is sitting on top of the filling cabinets that are right next to her desk. A person who sits near me was complaining before that she was not Catholic so that offends her. And she said that the person who put that up should take it down and just decorate for Christmas. I told her well you are Jewish should you and the rest of the people here who are Jewish take down their manurah's (sp? sorry)?
Then I said and also Christmas is also about Jesus and the birth not just about snowman and santa etc for some people...but they didnt like what i said
WOULD you take offense or what do you think??

Sounds like SOMEONE needs to pull the lost piece of the nativity set out of their ***... If it offends her, tell her to look the other way! Its not as if she's leading the office in a christmas prayer OR that she has a life size Jesus in the middle of the room OR that everyone else isnt allowed to express their holiday in their way! If the girl feels that strongly, she should bring in some religous decorations of her own to show her solidarity to her own religion! Tolerance, baby!

Well in my office we have a monorah up and i was a little upset that we did not have anything 'christmassy' up, so I bought a little mini Christmas tree.
People seem to forget that Christmas is not about a tree or santa it is about the birth of Christ. The fact that she has a nativity up is probably the most proper thing you can have up in comparison to the monorah.

We are Catholic and my dad works at a gated community that is primarily Jewish. He gets so angry b/c the people flip out that there is a Christmas tree in the lobby (as well as menorahs and other Hanukkah decorations). Some of the homeowners even complained that they play Christmas music throughout the main building!! Yet, my dad brings in his famous Christmas cookies and these people have no problems eating those Christmas shapes and designs; no one complains that he doesn't make menorah- shaped cookies LOL!

Re: NWR:Controversial Topic-Do you mind this...
My office manager put up a Happy Festivus* sign (Seinfeld) because we were tired of the people that we share a building with trying to out decorate their religions.
*Festivus is a fictional holiday created by Frank Costanza (played by Jerry Stiller) on the popular television comedy Seinfeld. Some fans of the show now celebrate this fictional holiday in real life.
Festivus is a holiday held on 23 December of each year. It was created as a response to the commercialism of the other December holidays.
Its slogan is “Festivus, a holiday for the rest of us”.

I actually do not understand why this is such a controversial issue...every darn YEAR. I can't see why people get offended. Personally I don't care if you put up a santa, a tree a menorah (sp?) or a pimp. Everyone should just remember the real reason for the holiday

ugh--the whole PC crap that this world has come to is just so damn ridicilious.... i mean i hate when ppl overuse the term 'offend'. does it really OFFEND you or are you just wanted to crap on someone else's display.
whats the big freaking deal---so what if there's a nativity scene--big whoop!!! there are soooooo many bigger issues to be 'offended' by than that.
sounds like the co-worker is just a bitter b*tch!

Re: NWR:Controversial Topic-Do you mind this...
i dont get that bc i LOVE LOVE LOVE learning about other cultures and religions
If one of my coworkers put up something that I didnt know about I would go right over and ask them what it was bc I love learning about new things!
One day FH and I were driving home and we saw all of these little candles on people's doorsteps and I went home and googled and found out it was a holiday!! It is so interesting!
On the other hand, some people go too far! We had a holiday party at work and the guy who ran it was a bit. . . ignorant lets say and he said GRACE over our food and it was all about 'our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ' etc and everyone was VERY uncomfortable when he was saying it but he was totally oblivious
i mean, he meant well and no one complained but i think he took it too far bc there were people of other faiths present and they were kind of 'forced' into the grace in a way you know?

Please ask her what exactly is offensive about that
I'm Catholic, but I'm really trying to see it from a non-Catholic perspective how that could be offensive and I'm having a hard time. I don't find the Star of David offensive? Does she?

You are 100% right, if that particular person wants her nativity then she should have it. As you said the birth of Jesus is th e real meaning of Christmas. As long as there is a menorah up too there should not be a problem. A menorah is their way of showing and celebrating their holiday, which is beautiful too. If you said that there wasn't a menorah then maybe I'd tone it down, but not if both holidays are being represented. JMO

I wouldn't. BRAVO to her for actually acknowledging the birth of Christ on Christmas instead of just Sant and snowmen!!

lol this reminds me of something FH and I were discussing yesterday. He said when we get a house he wants to put a nativity scene on the lawn. Now I really don't mind if other people put one out but I do NOT want one in front of my house. I told him we can only put a nativity scene on the front lawn if we represent my religion by putting a baby moses instead of a baby jesus in the nativity scene

I wasn't offended by the family driving on the belt parkway yesterday with the giant menorah on the roof of ther car -- with the proper amount of bulbs light!

i dont mind any of that... my first semester of college they roomed me (a very religious catholic) with a very religious jewish girl and we got along sooooo well. come this time of year our room was by far the most festive. a little menorah next to my little tree. lol. it was soooo cute!!
i think if we want people to be tolerate of our traditions, we should be tolerate of theirs.

People seriously need to drink more if $hit like this really bothers them. I'm sorry, I hope that doesn't come off rude, but come on. I'm Jewish and last week they had a Christmas (not holiday), Christmas, mini-concert of carolers in the building lobby and gave out crhistmas cookies. No Hanukah cookies, no anything else, just christmas decorations and carols, etc. Do I give a rat's @ss?? No.
Please, it bothers me more that people choose to waste their time and energy being bothered by these things, maybe I'm insensitive, but whatever. Stop whining and just enjoy this time of year whatever and however you celebrate.
Well said!

I think people are too sensitive and religion has caused wars for year whether its between countries or just arguments between people. Its hard to state your beliefs. I dont think its offensive and I would never care if someone put up decorations that had nothing to do with my religion. I respect all religions. The fact that she's offended is offensive in my eyes. No one is trying to hurt her. Theyre trying to celebrate what is supposed to be a peaceful time.

I think that whatever your belief is, you should be able to display it and enjoy it. Whether it is a mennorah or a nativity set, it shouldn't matter. If the girl put the nativity set on the Jewish girls desk, then I can see her having a problem with it... however, if the company allos you to decorate, you should put up whatever decorations you use to celebrate your beliefs.
I think the girl who is offended is being a little dramatic.jmo
i agree with danielle
me too.
People are oversensitive. Its her personal space, there is nothing offensive about a nativity set, just like there is nothing offensive about a mennorah.
