NWR..Cost of Rent?

Original post by SeaMaiden

FH and I are looking for an apartment now in the northeastern Queens area. We are trying to figure out how much we should 'throw away' on rent.(we cant afford to buy until after the wedding due to my MASSIVE student loans ). Im sorry if this question is too personal, but for those of you who rent, about how much do you pay?

i seriously almost DIED reading these..looks like im really NEVER leaving home

You'd be surprised what you can afford when it really comes down to it....

We're not in Queens (W. Babylon), but we pay $1000 for 1Br, all utilities included.

thanks kim! we relly have to start looking into something. im pissed i wish i wasnt in school or i could have taken the apt in FHs cousins house! its a huge one bedroom for 1000 everythig included also

You'll find something.... now's the time, while you're home, to really start saving. I have a few friends who are cops (they own places now) and when they were renting, the landlord was more inclined to rent to them and give them a break just because they liked knowing a cop was living there.... you just really have to do the research... it's time consuming and frustrating (esp. when you start to go out looking and see some of the places people consider apartments ), but once you find the one, it's perfect... we've been here for 2 years and we love it....

i hate the idea of paying for rent when we could be saving for the wedding but i cant stay home anymore!

do a search on craigs list, you can get good deals on apartments....my friend had seen a 1 bedroom apartment in howard beach which is a nice area for $850, it was this older couple renting it out, infact she didnt take the apartment and this was just a week ago, hmmm wonder if its still available?

Or you can call a mortgage broker just to see what you can get, they have alot of great deals for young couples who are first time buyers, with very little down and they can do the payments which might be the same as renting each month. But be careful how they do this bc alot of times when they will do very low payments for the beginning, later on they will raise it by alot...but its always good to try and you never know.

Either way good luck...It can get annoying, but if you do alot of research and just be willing to go see place after place you can find what you are looking for.

haha we live in howard beach in a one bedroom for 850 and we rent from old people.

1200 for a two bedroom in western Nassau.

JMO, I don't think it's 'throwing away' money. You need a place to live, you cant afford to buy, so you rent. You're paying for that space. Is it easier to save for a house/car/wedding if you're living with your parents? Sure. But it's not always an option.

Sorry for the rant.

i do agree, but a part of me feels torn because i know i have the option to live at home still. my family is making me feel guilty for moving out. i just feel that i need to be on my own to grow and that cannot happen at home. im 24 years old need my own life!! you all know what i mean.
