NWR..Do you feel comfortable discussing religion with people you work with??

Ok there is someone I work with who is just plain obnoxious. Thinks they are the authority on EVERYTHING!! A few weeks ago this person started talking about how bad Catholic people are and how they are wrong and you need to stay away from them. Now this person was saying this to myself and 2 other people. Now I am Catholic but hate confrontation so I didn't say anything but I was upset...which I should have.

Today this person starts saying stuff to someone else I work with about their religion in a totally rude inappropriate way..saying that he was wrong...It was BAD!

Not for nothing but in my office.. thats harrassment & grounds for dismissal.
But in all honesty, that is so uncalled for. I am so like you Kathleen. I would have taken offense to that, but would probably not have said I word. I HATE confrontation. One day that person is going to say it to the wrong person and they are going to be sorry they ever opened their mouth. People like that are just downright bitter & ignorant.

Well the guy I work with is supposedly going to a supervisor tomorrow and if necessary I will speak up...she insulted me and I was there when she insulted him!

i would tell that person flat out - to keep opinions to themselves that these are topics that you dont want to discuss @ work. (you need to do this) because next step after that is to inform HR - once they get involved any issue you do not like will be a dead issue around you.

it may sound harsh - but to offend someone faith is uncallled for. its one thing if this person is trying to hold a religious discussion - its another when they are dumping on your beliefs.

work is no place to discuss sex, religion or politics. If you were truly insulted, you should report this person to HR. There is no reason for anyone to make you feel that way ever, including at work.

Agreed. If you are even the slightest bit offended take it up with HR. It's such a shame that nowadays we still have to deal with these types of issues. I'm amazed with people's ignorance of others beliefs. I hope when I have children there are prejudices based on religion, race or gender. It's sad.

The discussion of religion and politics are a touchy subject. I have no problem talking to people about religion. I grew up in a family that are practicing Jehovah's Witnesses and it is a known fact that anyone who is in the religion has to talk to people about the religion in order to spread the word. What I do not like about ANY person or religious faction is when you make people speak ill of another religion. All people and religions have their down side not one is PERFECT.

I am very comfortable talking with people and discussing my views and if necessary can quote the Bible if need be to back up a point and also use my own thoughts to agree/disagree on certain things but I respect all people and their religious beliefs. To each his/her own.
