I am just wondering how many of you have a joint bank account with FH now, and how may are waiting until after the name change? Also, (I'm not trying to pry) how many of you pool your bills and checks together now and how many are still paying separate debts? I'd like to pool everything, but I feel that FH shouldn't have to be responsible for debts I accrued before him. Anyone else feel the same way?

Re: NWR...Finances...
We opened a joint account for the wedding money and to save together for a house and other things. we are splitting the bills and still keeping our separate accounts to pay them.

Re: NWR...Finances...
we have a joint checking account that we use for our rent. we put $ in from our ind accounts.
we split the bills we share. and pay the other stuff on our own. but its basically the same $ anyway. like if one of us wants to buy something, either one of us will pay for it.

Re: NWR...Finances...
Right now we still pay our bills out of our seperate account and our wedding stuff through our joint account.
Once we get married we will keep some monsey in our spereate accounts with most of it going to our joint accounts for all bills.

Re: NWR...Finances...
we have a joint savings right now and seperate checking accounts that will become joint after the wedding.
I have NO credit card debt and FH has about 10K.. i put all of his total owed on mine since its 0% for a year...we are paying it after the wedding - and like I said its HIS debt. But thats life and we are in this together and if we want to save for a house this is what it takes...

Re: NWR...Finances...
I thought about opening up a joint account and just pooling everything together but I'd rather have my own money to do with what I want. Of course all of the bills has to get paid to then after that I can spend what I want.

Re: NWR...Finances...
It seems like we all are doing the same thing. We both have separate checking accounts, and we have a joint for the wedding. I think once my name changes we will put all the bill money in one account, with separate savings account for us.

Unfortunately there's not always enough money to put some in one acct for bills and leave the rest in a separate acct for yourself.

Re: NWR...Finances...
fh and i actually opened a joint account a yr before we were engaged just to have some savings--thank god we did that year is more than 1/2 of what we will need for the wedding. And then each month we each put in our select amounts from our seperate bank accounts that our paychecks go into.
But we also have another checking account together because we transfer the money over from our ing savings so i can write the checks. we pay our own bills now though just bec well he is in Iraq and I am here.
but once he comes home we are closing our checking accounts our paychecks go to and opening a new one in a different bank together so we will have our ing savings for our soon to buy house and other stuff
but i don't care fh is going to take care of the bills etc so i am ok with having a joint account. and i am sure he wont mind if i spend some of it...bec hey i work for it too haha

Re: NWR...Finances...
we have joint everything. savings, checking, heloc, all the bills are paid jointly. we found it's much easier for our lifestyle. plus it's nice to have all the money in one place it's makes paying bills online a lot easier

When you have a joint account, and want to buy something as a surprise for FH..how do you do it without him noticing?

Charge it and pay it after he gets the gift!! And if he's anything like my FH...he doesn't actively check the acct on line so he'd probably never notice.

Re: NWR...Finances...
We've always had a joint account since we were engaged (like 3.5 years ago ) but we've just recently in February put our money together. We each have an allowance and kept our separate accounts because we both have direct deposit. The rest of the money goes together and we pay bills from that account. We weren't planning to do this before the wedding but I unexpectedly had to get a new car and we could afford it together. I was really worried about it taking its toll on our relationship but so far it has been really great. He's been so supportive of me because I decided to keep the job I have had for years so that I didn't have to start a new one before the wedding. It's only made me more sure that we are so right for each other. Try sitting down and talking to your FH. Good luck!

I know. I'm beginning to see that now. I'm just hoping there will be.

I know this sounds weird but DH and I keep things still seperate - he has his savings/checking and I have mine still even after the name change. I think it makes us budget our money and curb our spending habits as well to do it this way.
When it comes to credit card bills- if it's something like the car needed repair, or for the house, or something that we agreed to go halves in on (like concert tickets for example) then when the bill comes we each pay half the amount due. When it comes to cell phone, cable, internet, phone, rent, and car insurance/renters insurance, we split that down the middle half and half no matter the amount.
There are some things that I do (like I recently got him an air conditioner- I had to pay $200 per year extra to the landlord plus the price of buying the AC unit) that I'll just pay for even if it's for the both of us to enjoy. He also does the same.
I am the only one that is really in debt out of the two of us and I consoldated all my credit cards and make one flat payment each month. I probably would let DH help me out regardless but I wouldn't obligate him to do it.. if he happens to want to give me $500 more (as an example) each month torwards my debt I wouldn't turn it down but I wouldn't tell him that he MUST contribute to getting me out of debt- it's the same way if DH were in debt- I'd offer what I can do for him but I wouldn't want to be obligated to pay him each month a certain amount towards his debts he had prior to our marriage.
It does balance itself out this way for the two of us-I also know what bills he has (credit card, etc.) and one of the main things we don't fight about is money- that would just ruin the marriage imo.
I hope I was kinda clear- if you need any clarification feel free to ask me
