NWR...How did you choose your career?

Original post by nan&dave

Right now I'm in the insurance business, but I really need a change. I'm fed up and bored. I plan on going back to school, but I have no idea what to study.

I majored in communications in college, and wanted to be a speech writer. I interned in the White House and didn't like it too much, so after college I worked as a trader on Wall Street. Didn't like that either, so now I am working in a college with students, which I enjoy. Most people change careers several times so if you don't like what you are doing, try, try again!

This sounds HORRIBLE, but...after I got my BA, the only job I could find was as a retail manager (which is exactly what I was doing before I went to college in the first place).

And, I HATED IT, so I called my alma mater and asked what graduate programs I could get into. And, this was in February of 2002, and I wanted to start grad school in May of 2002.

So, they told me that they were pretty sure that the HR program would admit me... AND THEY DID!

I'm an HR Rep

Sue, did you get the Master's in HR at Stony Brook? I got my Master's in HR there and thought we might have had some classes together!

well I am an HR generalist and love my job but it is not all I plan to do. I have an artsy creative side that I want to explore, my degree will be in public policy and plan on getting my masters in HR management and Labor Relations.

Like X said yuo 'fall' into careers a lot. The woman who is doing my hair for the wedding was a reporter for AP and started working at a cosmetic counter at a mall and bam presto.........makeup artist and freelace writer now.

Re: NWR...How did you choose your career?

I chose my career path a little differently than most people I think. I started out by choosing the careers that made the most money. Doctor, Lawyer, etc. and listed them in the order that they appealed to me. Lawyer was #1 -- I love the law -- but after dabbling a little in the field I realized being a lawyer wasn't for me. Next on the list was computers which were always fun for me and came naturally to me. So I changed my major to Information Technology and here I am. Funny thing is, I ended up doing computers in a LEGAL field so I got the best of both worlds! I wouldn't say my career is my passion, but I do love my job and I'm happy doing what I do.

My original career path was school counseling. I got my masters for that at Post. I went to look for a position for 2 years after giving up. It was too frustrating trying to go for a job and not getting anywhere. I decided to go back to school for Library Science because I been working in libraries for 9 years and I love it and I love to read. I recently got a job as a children's librarian at babylon library.

I've always loved fashion, so working for a magazine was a no brainer. It is the most fun a girl can have at work. My friends laugh when I tell them the things I do.

I am in insurance as well...auto injury claims.

I followed a friend of mine to my company from business school...and 9 years later, I LOVE my job.

I love investigating the facts of an accident, photos and statements...then researching the mechanics of the injuries.

I'll be here probably until a baby comes. I may decided to stay home, but I'm undecided right now.

I have a graduate degree in forensic anthropology with plans to go into the FBI. Well, after grad school I applied and they require two or three years real world work experience before being accepted. So in the meantime I found a job as a working for a marketing company. Four years later, I am still here as an Account Supervisor. Not really liking it, but also not in a position right now to leave for the FBI academy. So marketing it is.

I was always interested in Alternative Medicine/Healing (ie: massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbs,etc...).
While I was in school studying Art/Art History I found myself looking into massage schools & wound up becoming a Massage Therapist! I absolutely love it- it's truly rewarding. I work in a spa enviornment as well as having my own business. It's great to work in a field where you make people feel better.
So I guess instead of choosing a career in Visual Arts I found myself in 'Healing Arts' (close enough, eh?)

I majored in English in college and i now teach 9th and 10th grade English. I always knew i wanted to teach and i combined that with my love of literature and here i am (and....on my off periods i spend my time on the boards instead of grading the mass amount of essays sitting on my desk!)

me too! I got my BA in English and now I am working on a MA in Education!

I was always a science dork... so I majored in Biochemistry. During college I was looking for an internship and one of the only ones left available was R&D for a cosmetic company. I got that internship and it was so much fun! Then I got an internship at Estee Lauder and that was awesome! So I decided to make that my career. I work at a small company where I am a formulation scientst. Very Very FUN!

My BIL works in the labs at Estee.. hehe
I was science dork too. Was nothing I couldnt handle as long as I could relate it to science. Something stupid happened in college and I never finished, just one year and no credits.

So I ended up working as a telemarketer then as a cashier before one of my customer finally talked me into looking to a job as a Marketing director. I was a Marketing Director for 2 years and getting paid crap ($14,000 a year) and working 12 hours days 6 days a week. Hours were 2pm to 2am. I was in bed by 5am and frankly the stress levels were killing me.

A friend at work said her mother was looking for a receptionist. I got interviewed for the receptionist. This was back in 1997 it was for an Insurance Producer. They offered the same Pay (sad, isn’t it?). I figured hell I can answer a phone and do a few little clerical things for the same pay and BE home before at a decent time.

I applied and they gave me little tests and such, the ‘boss’ told me seemed too bright for the front desk. So she challenged me. Figure out this job and get licensed in six months and we’ll move you up the ladder of account executives. Don’t, and we’ll shove you up front. Win/win for me. I was 21 and could care less.

6months later I was licensed and rolling. They gave me a $4,000 raise for passing the exam. Then I felt stupid in the business (not up to par) so I started taking tons of classes. Next thing I know I’m an expert in Forced Placed property insurance and Other Real Estate Owned coverage for Financial Institutions. My raises kept coming in I was promoted to Senior Account Executive (with one subordinate).

In 1999, I moved to NYC hoping to get out of Insurance and move into the IT world. Please, that lasted like all of 3 days. Got back into Insurance as a Claims Rep for a Broker. That lasted 3 years and I got 2 more designations, promoted to Senior Claim Rep (with a team of 5 below me). I specialized in Commercial Auto Claims and Liability Losses (lawsuits). Then, I decided I wanted to get back into the thick of it and came into this job.

Started as an Insurance Assistant in November 2002, I was promoted to Client Representative in January 2004 and yes earned another designation. Working on my NY license to be completed in August. I’m allowed no more promotions until I get a college degree.

So BACK to school I go this fall whoohoo!

I like my job cause I can research and find hidden facts. I was always really good at English (tho you can't tell here) Science & Math. So Insurance uses all of those things. I have to admit I miss doing claims where everyday was a new drama but this job is really fast paced so it's fun.

Steffie - me too!

I took the job as my first job out of college, figuring I could make some $$$ until I figure out what I want to do with my life. Many, many years later - I'm still here! lol

What company do you work for?

Well...I don't think I found my career...it found me. I went to FIT (Fashion institute). I always wanted to be a clothing buyer. I worked in retail store management (more money than a buyer at entry level). Somehow...I wound up as an administrative assistant. I was terrible...I never took the phone number for messages, etc. As an admin asst, I intercepted phone calls for a major project we were working on. I became the 'project manager'. A few years later...I am working in the IT world...for a retail company...so there is still clothes involved

I don't have my career job yet. I've always loved animals and late in life wanted to become a vet, but the only veterinarian school is in Ithaca...there's no way I can go unless we move there and that's not happening. I guess I'll never become a vet. Right now I'm a mail carrier and I hate it. I'm thinking about taking a course in medical billing so when the time comes that I become a mother, I can work at home and still be there for our children.
