NWR...How did you choose your career?

Original post by nan&dave

Right now I'm in the insurance business, but I really need a change. I'm fed up and bored. I plan on going back to school, but I have no idea what to study.

Well...I don't think I found my career...it found me. I went to FIT (Fashion institute). I always wanted to be a clothing buyer. I worked in retail store management (more money than a buyer at entry level). Somehow...I wound up as an administrative assistant. I was terrible...I never took the phone number for messages, etc. As an admin asst, I intercepted phone calls for a major project we were working on. I became the 'project manager'. A few years later...I am working in the IT world...for a retail company...so there is still clothes involved

I worked in the IT field for over 5 years. Do you work near the help desk at all or desktop support??? I was a level 2 Network Tech and also went to Computer Career Center and earned a PC Tech certification...

Actually...I am the Director of Retail Systems and I work in software support for specific retail applications. I don't work on the network at all. I am responsible for all head office applications, support of all store applications including all the registers at our retail stores across the world. We work with hardware and software, but it is retail specific.

Hey razz1031
I actually started out as a veterinary science major at Cornell, but switched after my first internship. I found it was a very hard job for people who really love animals because there were so many people not willing to spend the $ to have even minor things done to their pets, and instead opted for the cheaper option of putting them to sleep and replacing them with another free one from the shelter. There are many people who place little value on the lives of pets and animals. Of course there were people spending tons of $ on chemo and operations for pets, but it was too difficult having to put down so many animals that could have been easily helped. Just wanted to let you know not to have any regrets about that, because after having tried it, I know I won't...
