i'm sorry this has nothing to do with anything wedding related...but i am so upset about my cat and i don't know what to do.
last year i came home from a business trip to find my cat lying still on the floor, wailing. i took him to the emergency animal hospital, he had to stay over, he was having trouble w his urinary tract, and after that he had to stay at the regular vet for almost a week. the whole thing cost me $2,500. i didn't have the $ so i borrowed it from my dad and i only just finished paying him off.
2 months ago he was having similar problems, so we took him to the vet and it wasn't as bad so she was able to check him out, do tests and just give him medicine. $300.
today we came home from atlanta and the cat was crying. i felt his bladder and it was full. we took him to the vet and they said he's bad again and has to stay overnight. it could be another $1,000.
FH keeps telling me that we are saving for a wedding and we can't keep paying all of this money every few months if this keeps happening. he told me...that we might have to put the cat to sleep. it hurts even just typing that and makes me feel sick. i started to cry at the vet and FH yelled at me. he apologized on the way home, but he still feels that we have to put the cat to sleep if this happens again.
my cats are like my children. i told him that but he said they are just cats. but they are NOT just cats to me! i don't know what to do, i can't put the cat to sleep but i can't afford this if it happens again. we are trying to save for a wedding and if the money keeps going to the cat then we can't have a wedding. so FH told me i have to choose between the wedding and the cat.
i am so so so sad. my poor kitty. but it's causing problems between me and FH. but i CAN'T let my cat die!!! that would break my HEART!!
what would you do??

Im so sorry about your cat. Its very sad that he keeps having these terrible problems. Is he getting crystals??
I can understand how you feel because my FH feels the same way about our dog. We paid $600 for him and FH always says that he will never pay more than what we paid for him in regards to health problems. Thank god we havent had anything come up yet, but its so sad to think that he has no emotional attachment to our dog. I would spend every last penny that I had if my dog got sick! I think some people just dont get attached to their pets the way a lot of people normally do. My FH literally thinks of Franklin as a dog, not a family member and its so upseting to me cause I love him like hes my child!

OMG I am so sorry. I started to tear just reading this. I can totally understand where you are coming from, my Petunia is my life. I personally wouldn't be able to put my dog down unless she was in so much pain and what she had was not cureable. Again I am so sorry about you having to go through this. You need to do whatever you feel is best. If you need anything just FM me.

I really dont know what I would do. It is a lot of money but if it was your child you would pay it. At the same time, if you have to seriously pick either your cat or your wedding, you have to make that decision and nothing any of us will say will make your decision any easier. All I can do is say I'm sorry and we are here for you if you need a shoulder to cry on!

I am so sorry about your cat. I don't have any pets right now but, I grew up having dogs. I remember the pain and heartache I went through when my dogs got sick and had to be put to sleep. I want a dog so bad but Fh constantly brings up the $ factor and if they should get sick. It's def. expensive. If you need anything don't hesitate to ask.

I am so sorry! that is a really crappy situation!!! you should look into pet insurance, and talk to your vet about preventitive measures you can take (for a person with a urinary track infection i've heard drs recommend drinking cranberry juice) see if there is anything like that... also you can ask the vet if you can just have the meds, it might be cheaper if the cat doesnt have to stay there. I'm sorry i cant be more help... good luck and my thoughts and prayers are with the kitty and you

Re: NWR...sick kitty problems
Couldn't the animal hospital work out some kind of payment plan or something? That is so sad. We bought a puppy and after like 3 weeks it broke its leg. It cost a fortune. People kept telling us about pet insurance but we laughed it off.

Re: NWR...sick kitty problems
that is such terrible news. I really hope that your FH doesnt push to have her put to sleep, that would be horrible.
Did you talk to the vet.. is this going to be reaccuring? maybe its something in her diet that you can change to prevent the reaccuring UTI's
I know what you are going through though. my dog Pebbles has been the the vet 2 times in the last 3 weeks. She stops going to the bathroom all together. the first time it cost me $550 and then my sister took her again this week and it was $400. For all these tests that don't give us an answer and these werent even over night stays. (and when she was 10 weeks she broke her leg and needed 2 pins put in. its hard too because she doesnt EVER cry or show pain) I couldnt imagine putting her to sleep.
I would talk to the vet about finding a solution so this doesnt keep happening, orsomething. if youneed to talk FM me.
good luck

Re: NWR...sick kitty problems
That is too bad about your kitty, ill pets are very scary and frustrating. I would suggest talking to your veterinarian about preventative measures. Many times urinary tract issues are diet dependent and can be managed with a combination of diet modification (ie perscrption diets meant to decrease the chances of calculi formation/crystals) and strict monitoring of his normal urinary health to make sure you are on the road to prevention of future episodes. My cat has a condition known has feline lower urinary tract disorider (FLUTD). He has to be on a special urinary tract diet and occasionally has minor flare ups but they are much more controlled than they were prior to the diet change and dilligent monitoring of his litterbox behavior. Hope you get the help you need. I wouldn't give up yet, the love of a pet certaintly outweighs any joy that one may get out of a single night of partying! Good luck, I hope your FH understands.

Re: NWR...sick kitty problems
I love my kitties like you and am currently giving one insulin shots twice a day for diabetes.... I know how expensive they can be.... Ok first piece of advice, dont put kitty down unless vets say thats the best option, second kitty advice i have a girl cat with urinary tract probs.... one thing that has drastically helped her is F.U.S 'Feline Urinary Tract Support' Its available at petco is ten bucks, its a cranberry vitamin cat treat, just like you or i it helps them clear up urinary infections faster too... and its in the form of a treat, they like it... My vet explained that some cats are more proned and will just get them, she gets them every few months pretty bad, she pees blood :( BUT when she starts whining i give her the pills and she seems to get through them faster, ALSO get the cat off of dry cat food, dry food contains ash which causes crystallization in their kidneys... which causes urinary tract infections.... Ihope some of this stuff helps, i understand what you are going through....

Re: NWR...sick kitty problems
first of all, thank you so much for all of your kind responses...that alone makes me feel a little happy even though i'm still really upset.
to answer a few questions, i looked into pet insurance, but b/c he has already had this problem, they probably wouldn't give it to me, or would charge me an insane amount every month.
yes, it is crystals...which means it's like a sand that builds up in his bladder and blocks him up.
there are preventative measures which we have been trying our best to follow...he is supposed to drink a lot of water and is only allowed natural food. so we only buy the cats this special food from petco and we have water dishes all over the apartment to encourage them to drink, which we refill constantly...
BUT...we live in the upstairs of FH's parents house. we have a door at the top of the steps, but it's not a real door...it's an accordian door...and the cats have learned how to open it themselves (little bastards) and so they sneak downstairs sometimes and eat FH's parents' cat's food. which is fancy feast, the worst food our cat could have b/c of all the additives.
so we try everything to keep them upstairs...but no matter how many times i tell my FMIL, she always comes up here and opens the door b/c she thinks it's cute for them to run all over the house. and we were away for the weekend, and when we came home our door up here was wide open, and the cat was sick. so i'm really upset with FMIL...but i can't say anything to her or to FH about it...and so he's mad at ME.
i'm sorry, i know i keep going on about this, but i can't stop thinking about it. and he just doesn't understand. i know a lot of you have pets, and even those who don't, i just knew i could come on and talk to you guys about it.
im sorry, this is the longest thing ever. but thank you again for your posts, they really did make me feel a little bit better.

awwwww, you are such a good kitty momma! your kitties are very lucky to have someone who loves them so much. you have really made me feel better that i want to keep helping my cat. it's just so much money...
also, thank you for the tip about the cranberry pills. i am a little annoyed my vet hasn't suggested that, but i'm definitely going to get them...i'm so glad you responded and let me know about it.
