Re: NWR...sick kitty problems

Ahh that is so frustrating about your family! I would say if they want the kitty to go upstairs and potentially eat their cat's food, they should be paying your veterinary bills! Second option, you could ask them to put their cats on the same food that your veterinarian recommends for your cat. It won't hurt their cats to be on a urinary specific diet (either moist preferably, or dry if need be) and may prevent them from having the same problems that you are running into with your kitty as fancy feast = crystalls= urinary tract disease! That way when your cat makes a break for your families kitty food at least it won't destroy the progress you are trying to make by feeding your cat an appropriate diet.

yeah i was thinking of asking them that...and for a minute i thought 'but they won't want to pay for the more expensive cat food' but then i realized they are giving their cat fancy feast which is the most expensive there is (i think...)

and yeah, i think someone else made a comment about switching from dry food too...which is a good idea. i thought that buying more natural cat food was ok even dry, but maybe i should just cut out the dry altogether. what annoys me the MOST is that when the vet told me 'low ash food' she didn't tell me what low ash was, or what kind of food was high ash. if she had just said no or less dry in the first place maybe things could have gotten better.

ok i should stop trying to blame everyone else and just deal with the fact that i have a sick kitty. i love him and i can't put him to sleep. so i'm just going to have to take more extreme measures to try and keep this from happening.

thank you!!!!

Re: NWR...sick kitty problems

I just asked my FH his opinion, and he said, 'Well, I know coming down to it I would open up credit cards to keep the cat alive, if its quality of life would continue to be good, and he is young enough.'

I recently put my dog to sleep, and he was 12, and they said he needed to get surgery to stay alive, and that is if he made it through surgery and it was successful. We had to make that decision, but I am sure if he was younger, we would have paid the large amount of money and done it.

It is really you and your FH's decision...and I know it is a tough one. I hope everything works out....my thoughts are with you.

I can see how FH is trying to save for the wedding but IMO, a wedding is one day. your cats are a part of you and will be with you for a long time. if they mean a lot to you, i would hope FH would understand this and respect how you feel.

i am so sorry about your situation. i dont have cats but i can only imagine how it would feel to be put in this position. Regardless if FH thinks a cat is just a cat, I hope he can understand that this is something thats important to you and support the decisions you have to make. The only suggestion i know of is possibly giving prophylactic medications. i know nothing about animals but i know that with people who get chronic urinary infections that a low dose antibiotic can be given daily that prevents this kind of thing. i would be surprised if something like this didnt exist for cats. ask your vet about all of your options and if you dont like what they say, get another opinion.

Oh my gosh! I started reading it and got really, really upset!

I am SO sorry about your cat. I couldn't/wouldn't put my animals down....

Honestly, I'm disappointed in your vet too! You shouldn't be finding out these helpful tips from all of us non-vet people!

Maybe you should switch vets and get someone else to look at your cats? Maybe they'd be more helpful?

By my apt. in Manhattan there is a cat hospital. ONLY cats....and the vet there is top notch. Its on 66th and Riverside Blvd. If you have anymore serious problems, think about taking him/her there. They know what they are doing.

Good luck

Re: NWR...sick kitty problems

I have a kitty and I grew up with plenty of animals. This has got to be the hardest thing ever!!! But I would NOT want to live with any regrets, so FH would just have to put up with the fact that I would spend thousands of dollars, even if I dont have it, I would find it or take out credit cards to save my kitty, ONLY if I knew that it was going to make him recover and only if I knew he would not be in ANY pain. It wouold be selfish of me to keep him alive just for my sake. IF hes in pain I would have to do the right choice and put him asleep.

I would def work on putting a hook and eye on your door, on the bottom and top and keep it closed from the outside, so they cant get downstairs into the other food. Maybe rub his tummy to help the movement, keep it on natural foods and purify the water. I KNOW im anal. BUT i give my cat purified water and I change it all the time.

AWE...good luck and I will prayer for you and kitty!!!

OMG I have kitty I'd be so upset if this happened. I'm so sorry! I would never have the heart to put him down ...even through everything. And I could see my FH reacting the same way yours did. But in the long run its a decision you have to live with and you don't want any regrets. I think it would be very painful for me to bring myself to even consider doing that. Sh*t always happens, and the reality is that as much as you want to plan and save you can't predict what is going to happen.

Oh I am so sorry that you have to go through all this...my little Lucy (toy fox terrier) had pneumonia when I got her...I only had her 1 month and I spent $2500 in vet bills and she died anyways...I was so devastated and hysterical....I totally understand what you are going through...its so hard
Is there surgery that your kitty can get? did you do any research online about it?

Re: NWR...sick kitty problems

that is so sad!! i totally know how you feel!! this was the exact situation when i had my cat

i would def try to figure out a way to pay for your kitty!!! can your parents loan you the money?? is there a way to take out a loan?? i mean, its your CHILD pretty much & it is important to you! i think something to remember is that yeah you are paying for a wedding, but something that is a necessity (like this) can't be overlooked!!

please let us know what happens!!!

awwww...that is so sad, i want to cry. i'm so sorry that happened to you...but you tried to help her, so you have to feel good about that.

i don't think there is a surgery but that's a good idea, i'll find out. thanks for the suggestion.

that is a great idea to put the latches on the door...i feel so silly but i didn't even think of that!! and we could put them on the inside and the outside, so we can do it when we're home and when we leave.

i'm not kidding, i would not have thought of that. that really helps, thank you!!

you know what? you might be right. the only reason i continue going to this vet is b/c they have all his history...but i really don't like them, one of the doctors has a really bad attitude and always seems crabby. maybe i should consider switching, and bringing him to the city if it means he would get the right treatment.

thank yoU!

Re: NWR...sick kitty problems

FH and I have gone thru the ringer with our dog (our last vet bill was $2900- that was last week ) so I totally sympathize with you. For us, there is no question about where our priorities lie financially... if our dog needs a procedure, that's where the money goes. He's our life....

for a healthy kitty!

Just remember, you can always have your cats records transfered. Where do you take your cat now? I can recommend an EXCELLENT vet in West Islip where they're taken such excellent care of Cooper and they they're 24hrs.
