NYC Girls...How are you getting around with the strike??
Original post by beautyq115
As someone who used to work in Manhattan a while ago and someone who hated the commute on a 'normal' day..I cannot even imagine what this is like for you girls!

I'm going from Brooklyn Heights to Washington Heights and NOT looking forward to it. I've worked from home the past two days but I have to go in tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to this. I can't imagine how long it will take!!!

In my car as always.
I'll be honest, I enjoy sleeping two hours later than usual but I am very concerned. I teach special education in a psychiatric day treatment center. My students have cognitive functioning 2, 3 and 4 grade levels below where they should be. Some of my students will be taking the 8th grade ELA and Social Studies exams. They need all the time in the world to study and prepare for a these exams (as does ANY 8th grader) but even moreso because of their special needs. Losing class time they need so much, due to the 2 hour delayed school openings, will have an effect on their performance.

Driving.
Getting into midtown was a breeze after 11 a.m. but getting out in rush hour traffic was hectic.

Driving in from Brooklyn every day before 5:00 The morning is no problem -yesterday it took 1.5 hours to get home, day before - 1 hour.
Thank goodness today was my last day of doing this - I leave at 10 am today for NC-headed home for Christmas
I hope this is over by the time i get back.

I didn't even try yesterday and it took me 2 hours today, 1 hr. of standing on line for the LIRR and the rest train time and walking from Penn.
Although my company offered to pay for the extra cost, it's only about another $4 a day. It's more the time and waiting that's killing me. I'm still at work as I'm afraid to hit the lines again.
Siobhan, not sure if this helps you or not, but for the past 2 days, I've gotten to Penn around 5:45 and taken the 8th Avenue entrance and walked through the Amtrak station to the corridor in the back. it bypasses the insane mob in the front and there hasn't been a line yet.
I work in SoHo and I've been taking the LIRR to Penn, then the PATH down to 9th st. All in all, it's only taken me about 20-30 minutes longer than what it would normally take me so I'm not complaining.

u got that right. the president of the union is blaming bloomberg and pataki for this
The more I watch him..the more it seem like he has his own personal agenda for this strike!
dh agrees with that
I wonder if he gets docked pay!
no way, he is an employee of the TWU, a PRIVATE company. he is not subject to the Taylor laws...however, he IS subject to the justice system and fines applied for being in CONTEMPT OF COURT....right now, this strike is no skin off his back. he's out in the news, making his name. reminds me of Al Sharpton back in the day.

Re: NYC Girls...How are you getting around with the strike??
Last night Fiance and I walked from Wall St. to 65th St and 1st ave
5.7 miles and 3 hours later.
Mind you it cost us 40 dollars to cab it to work 1 WAY or 40 to drive with our car. WORK is MANDATORY, but no one has 100 a day to spend on commuting 3 DAYS before XMAS!!!!!!!!
I EFFIN HATE THIS STRIKE--I do not care who I offend either
sorry to vent

I'm very lucky - I live in Queens and work in the financial district. My office set up meeting points for carpooling. I drive to a meeting point in Queens and then carpool with 4 other co-workers to downtown Manhattan.
