are your landlords installing carbon monoxide detectors? and if so are tehy chargin you??? my landlord taped a note up in our building saying to give an extra $25 for this. But if its a new law requiring THEM to install it do i really need to pay??? they havent even told us when they are going to install them.

Re: NYC Residents.. carbon monoxide?
It doesn't sound fair, but if it was me I would just pay the $25 rather than risk dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. If it is a law they should be responsible for it... but I'm not sure of the laws.

Re: NYC Residents.. carbon monoxide?
i'm in brooklyn over here. the management company installed new carbon monoxide alarms about a month ago at no charge to the rentees or owners (it's a building/condo so most are owners, some rentees)! your landlord should've taken care of the cost!!

Re: NYC Residents.. carbon monoxide?
yeah thats why i'm didnt include it with the january rent as it said to on the door.
first off, i know i am not required by law to pay them. theyre tryingt o pull a fast one.
secondly, it doesnt cost $25!
and lastly.... i would consider it if they would at least type up a letter or some sort of communication... not just tape up a very UNdetailed letter on the door of the building!
i wrote a letter and put it with the january rent. they can contact me if they want $25.

They installed ours about a month and a half ago and charged us $25 as well...I told DH that if we're paying for it, we should get to take it when we leave!

Re: NYC Residents.. carbon monoxide?
Owning the hardware store I have noticed and heard from several supers that THEY are required by law. NOT you. YOU should not have to pay and if they make you, you can report them but it is law and it is required. So if you want to pay 25.00 then go ahead but I wouldnt. Also the average cost of the NYC approved one is between 20 - 25.00.

Re: NYC Residents.. carbon monoxide?
We installed on ourselves in our co-op. We got a plug in one and put it next to the floor. FH said that it is better closer to the floor because carbon monoxide doesn't rise like smoke does. If you wait for the detectors on the ceiling to detect them there could be a significant amount in air already.

I think by law they can charge you a small amount.

Re: NYC Residents.. carbon monoxide?
our landlord hasn't said anything about it but DH is going to ask. Dh said he'll do it himself and take it out of the rent, since our landlord is a scumbag. He doesn't do a damn thing for us. Our bedroom ceiling has been leaking since we moved in (not dripping, but ruining the paint and wall). And he's a cop too, you'd think he'd know better.

Re: NYC Residents.. carbon monoxide?
our building charged us $25 as well. here's the really annoying thing though, we already had one. but they made us put theirs in w/o telling us they were charging. then they informed us a few weeks later via a note in the hall that it would be $25. argh.... i don't know if my hubby ended up paying or not.

Re: NYC Residents.. carbon monoxide?
I completely agree that this new law is annoying. I live on the 32nd floor---where is the carbon monoxide coming from and then wafting up that high? Anyway, the law does annoyingly state that they are required to put it in, but tenant is required to pay (if building doesn't offer).
I think taking it when you leave is a great/hilarious idea.

The law states a one time fee of $25.00 is the max.

you can also get them free at certain police stations. At least you could have when the law came out I do not know if they still have any
