My fiance and I became engaged in August & have been actively looking at venues (21 so far) throught NY & NJ. We've narrowed our search down to NYIT's de Seversky Center in Old Westbury & The Old Field Club in Setauket. We're expecting approx 85 - 90 ppl to show (105 invited) and we're down to the food tastings. The Old Field Club is considerably cheaper, but so far the Catering Manager has been a bit difficult to deal with. He's told us numerous times he doesnt normally do tastings (how can you book a place and spend $15-$20-something thousand and never have tried the food), and even told us that he didn't know if our dates were still available (when all 6 options were open the week prior). Initially I was leaning more towards the Old Field Club b/c of the savings, but the manager's attitude (before even booking) is making us a little apprehensive. Can anyone give tell us if they've had similar experiences? Does he get better once you book? Is there someone else there we can deal with? Is he more responsive after you've booked w/him?
I must say, to date NYIT has been great! They've been responsive, polite, professional, but they are considerably more expensive so I'm I little torn. My fiance and I don't want to choose a place b/c of $$ ONLY to have our day ruined. At the same time, I don't want to pass up on a venue I really like b/c I'm misreading a catering manager. Help!! I'd welcome any stories of either venues. Thanks!!

I have to say, he's gotten a lot better. Truly, he's been very responsive lately.

Re: NYIT's de Seversky Center vs. Old Field Club
We're booked at the Old Field Club for next July. I had similar concerns at first with Tom but once he starts to realize that you're serious about booking with them he settles down a bit. I think i probably agree with what someone else said, taht they don't NEED the wedding business so he's a little flippant about it at the beginning. But I've found he's gotten better so far.
We were able to get in for a tasting where he set up a table in the bridal suite for us while another event was happening and let us taste all of the hors d'oerves and appetizers as they came out of the kitchen. We were very happy with the taste and quality of the food and also found the wait staff to be very friendly and polite and professional. Tom also mentioned that sometime in Jan or Feb he has a couple of weekends where he lets the couples who are getting married there soon come in and taste all of the food off the menus so we can choose our menus for the day of. Not sure if that'll actually happen but it sounded good anyways!
Good luck with your decision making!

Yeah, we came back this past Sat during a wedding and sat in the office, to try the hor d'oeuvres which were very good. Looking at the menu though I can't help feeling like the cocktail hour is a little light in it's selections. Can anyone tell me if the added items to the cocktail hour? And if so, what? You can FM me if that's more comfortable for you. I want to add items, but I'm not sure what that'll cost me..
Thanks!!

I am getting marrid at the OFC on 11/15. Tom has been completely amazing from the first handshake. I have heard that many girls had different experiences. I just never knew him to be anything but helpful.
I also wanted to taste the food, and haven't yet. Glad to hear that it was so delicious! Good Luck to you!
