Right now, we're lucky bc our parents only live 10 minutes away from each other and my mom always has every holiday, so its not that hard, but still a pain. Now, we split Thanksgiving. We'll usually go with his family for dinner and come to my mom's for dessert. For Christmas, we usually spend one day with one family and the other with the other family. We try to alternate the years because in both families, Christmas Eve is the bigger holiday and its a lot more fun. In the future, I'd LOVE to host the holidays! I actually can't wait for that. I know its stressful, but I also think it would be so much fun. Plus, I think it will be nice to have both of our families together!

Happy Birthday to your bro!!

As far as the holidays, the only major ones that have conflicts are Thanksgiving and Christmas (Easter is never an issue).

For Thanksgiving this year, my family (thank god) has gone back to normal tradition of having the celebrations earlier in the day (12-1pm). The past few years they have been having it later and it's made it impossible for FI to attend ours and has always made me late for his. This year we'll be able to attend both (just gotta keep in mind i'm eating twice so better not fill up at the first dinner!).

For Christmas, my family usually does the Christmas Eve celebrations because everyone has somewhere else they got to go on Christmas Day. So FI and I will be going to my family's house Christmas Eve and then Christas Day we'll be doing lunch at my Grandma's and then dinner at his parents.

Happy Birthday Little Brother!

This used to be an issue for us. We would try and make both places and we were running all over the place. For Thanksgiving we would literaly be going to three different houses

So, last year we decided we are going to split the major holidays:

Thanksgiving we went to my family.
Christmas Eve we went to his family.
Christmas we went to both because one does it earlier than the other.

This year we will flop Thanksgiving and Christmas and go to the opposite families.

It is way easier than having to run around. I'd rather give one family our full attention than be running out the door or coming late.

I think we split Easter too? I can't remember.

My family makes this really easy physically but difficult emotionally. SInce my parents are split up, Dad lives in PA and mom lives in a friend's house in EAstern Suffolk. Dad usually goes to NJ to my uncle's house for Turkey, so I go to FH. Mom goes with her sisters (big Irish family).

FH's family does Christmas Eve, so I'll usually go there and stay overnight, and then Christmas Day we'll do something with my mom. Then we'll celebrate Christmas with my Dad after New Year's.

So, there' sno conflict, but we're travelling all over for weeks and it kinda ***** that my family is not all together, so eventually when we have a big enough place, I want to host the holidays so we don't have to do that anymore!

Well right now FH and I are at each of our houses separately for Xmas being that FH's family all live in Puerto Rico and mine is all in NY. And then for New Years he either comes here to NY or I go there to PR.

Once we are married, I think we will have to alternate between spending the holidays in NY and Puerto Rico. Maybe one year it'll be NY for XMas and Puerto Rico for Easter/spring vacation and then vice versa for the following year. Kinda difficult but I'm sure it'll work out.

Jason has always managed to spend every holiday with my family.

The only issue we've had over the years is thanksgiving because his brothers drive in from out of state and I go to my aunt's in Massapequa.

Our families also only like 5 minutes from each other so if we need to ever go half and half we could do that too.

It depends if he is off. FH is a police officer, so we take it as it comes. If he is off we split the day so we can be with both families. As for hosting our own, probably not for a long time.

Happy Birthday to your bro!!!

We usually split Thanksgiving. We go to see FH's family earlier in the day and then go to see my family late afternoon/evening.

FH's family celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve and my family celebrates on Christmas so it works out perfectly for us!

happy birthday to your brother!

this is a small problem for us!

Thanksgiving - im not sure what we are going to do - his mom has it at their house and my mom has it here - the past few years we just split and he went there and i stayed here - not sure what we are going to do this year now that we are engaged or after we are married?????

Christmas Eve - This is the BIGGIE.... my whole family comes here and his family goes to his moms house...
Christmas Day - My family doesnt do anything - we ususally stay home in our PJs all day - is family goes to his grandmas house
for the past few years we split on eve and both went to his g-mas on day - i think the only fair thing is that we go with my famiky on eve and his on day (but FH's uncle and one g-ma arent at the other gmas on day - so he wont see them!)

Easter - my family usually goes out to dinner - this last year FHs g-ma invited my family there and we went - it was nice - not sure if thats going to be the deal for now on??

do you all think its wierd to split up now and go different places while we are engaged and just deal with it when we get married or should we start the decisons now????

This is turning into a big issue for us now after getting engaged and living out of state

FH's family is very spread apart.. so they never see any family during the holidays and usually just wind up going away..on Christmas they fly to Puerto Rico....and Easter usually Florida.

My family on the other hand goes the whole 9 yards when it comes to Thanksgiving..Christmas Eve....Christmas Day..and Easter. Everyone is extremely close and EVERYONE is always present on a holiday... My father would NEVER have it any other way ...if i was not present at a holiday...sh$t would hit the fan....especially now that i live out of state...the thought of not being home for a holiday is just not a thought. I also LOVE being home for the holidays...i come from a very large family and feel that its great to be able to spend time with my entire family.

So in the past FH has always been with his family during the day and made his way to my house later in the day/afternoon....or we left to meet his family in Puerto Rico the day after Christmas(which worked out well )....but my family now feels that since we are engaged he should be present at EVERY holiday no matter what if he is marring into my family....its going to be very interesting come this holiday season

The past 2 years we've done Thanksgiving with my family, and Christmas day with his in SI, but now that this is the first holiday season without my mom, I'm not sure what we're doing. I'd like to spend both holidays with my family, but we only really see his twice a year, so I don't want to miss out on seeing them.

Maybe we'll do x-mas eve with his family, and x-mas day with mine...

Since we have been together so long we already have it worked out...Thanksgiving dinner is with my mom and we stop at his parents after dessert, Christmas day is here then his parents.

Basically we always start with my mom and end up at his parents. They are not that into the holiday, they celebrate but they don't care that we come there after

After reading everyone's posts, I would just like to point out that my sister had it right - we are Catholic, and her husband is Jewish - no conflicts whatsoever!

We do Thanksgiving with my family...FH is first generation, so his parents really aren't into that one. Christmas Eve is with his side, b/c they don't celebrate on the day...and it works out for my family, b/c since I have a shellfish allergy they stopped their Christmas Eve seafood dinner, but now that I go with FH on the eve, they do the seafood again and don't miss me one bit ;) Christmas day we spend with my side. FH's parents don't do a whole lot on Easter, so so far, that's been with me. We've been pretty lucky so far!
