Off topic...job question
At my job there were a ton of layoffs a while back and I was told about 2 months ago by my manager of another person who does what I do is getting laid off. Oddly enough, she's still here making me wonder when this layoff is going to happen. My company us merging with another and my company has been very vague in whats going to happen, how we're getting split up, etc. They told us in a metting a few months ago that they would know more the end of May but did say when merges happen sometimes there's cuts but they didn't know anything..yea right. Anyway, Would my company know already whose getting the boot by now?

Re: Off topic...job question
sounds like you have alot of big decisions to make...i have the same problem with my classes this summer. I need two more classes in order to finish my masters by september & ofcourse they are offered from 1-4pm in Brooklyn & the city . That means i really cant work during the week, just on weekends
I dont think you should leave the classes for some other time. I think its a good idea to get them finished with & out of the way. When ur doing your student teaching maybe you can tutor? or find something for the weekends.
ALso, you can sit and worry all day about if & when you might get laid off but just try to let go of that...if it happens it happens & maybe it will be for the best since u'll get a severance package...
Good luck with whatever you decide...

Re: Off topic...job question
Yes...your company pretty much has a list of people that are in jeapordy - they know. UNLESS< they are the smaller of the companies merging, then the LARGER company has final say and their HR team usually keeps things hush. That list constantly changes when they speak with their attornies, senior managers and management committees. It also changes when someone leaves on their own, gets really sick, etc... so, it usually is never really finalized. However, NYS law requires they give you 90 day notice if they are restructuring... called the WARN notice if you will.
I am sorry it is causing you stress...its not easy out there. However, it is good to know that as small as it is...unemployment benefits can last over a year now. It is a small comfort to having a job, but it does help.
