Official 'Mother Survival' Thread

I'm starting a mother survival thread for those of us unlucky girls that were 'blessed' with mothers that really know how to hurt their daughters. I've vented a ton today, so I'm just starting this thread for anyone else. So vent away! I am here for you, and hopefully you all wil be here for me when I need it.

I have no complaints about my mommy but there are a few people I would like to scream at.

As much as I love my mom...sometimes she makes me want to just run off and elope! The worse thing she's done was complain about who was in my bridal party...divorced parents make things that much more difficult!

Re: Official 'Mother Survival' Thread

my mom has driven me to madness about a million times since I started planning my wedding. she does nothing but offer opinions on things...she hasn't helped me with anything....she just tells me what a 'bizarre' (her fav word) idea something is...or she tells me that she thinks the wine glasses on my registry are too 'plain'

Does anyone here not EVER get along with their mom? That's how it is for me. It's not just wedding stress...it's how she treats me all the time.

My mother squints her eyes at everything or crosses her arms as she sits back and sighs and then follows with a 'No, I really like it!' OMG - don't do that!!!!

My mom told me a few months before my wedding to stop talking about my wedding because it bores her

that really hurt, bad!

even on the day of my wedding, all she whined about was how awful she thought her hair looked

moms or not, some people are just clueless.

My mother passed away when I was five. But my FMIL drives me to drink. One minute she is your best friend the next she hates you.

if my Mom was alive- I am sure I would be ready to kill her

but I do want to kill my FMIL- and so does my FH- so I can still relate

At this point, I have NO relationship with my mother. I haven't spoken to her since the end of June. My mom is just clueless and does things without realizing how they will affect others... she only thinks about how they will affect her.

I may be one of the few brides here with a mother who is a senior citizen (73). Many times she blurts out things before speaking. She is very set in her ways and as many of you know, as people age, they cannot handle change. I try to remember this every time we disagree. I try to compromise in areas where I can without sacrificing some sense of self. If she thinks the sky is green and the grass is blue then so be it. Something are not worth fighting over. BUT there are many times when she tries to pull power trips and it is so unnecessary. She hurls insults at me and calls me 'inflexible' when my opinions arent in agreement with hers. It is especially difficult as we are both still mourning my father. So many mixed emotions surrounding our special day, its hard to distinguish between tears of joy and tears of sorrow.

Ditto on that...my FMIL needs to understand that it's our wedding...not hers!

Re: Official 'Mother Survival' Thread

I absolutely LOVE my FMIL. She loves to hear about the details, gives ideas without needing everyone of them to be included and is just happy to be a part of the process. I truly have been blessed.

But my mother on the other hand, needs to be the center of my attention at all times. And now that I am getting married, she constantly says 'you're pulling away' or ' I know you'll spend holidays with everyone BUT me'. It's comments like that that make me absolutely nuts. I can never make a decision and have her just accept it. She automatically assumes I have made that decision because someone else told me to, or because they want it. Hello? half of my wedding 'compromises' are because it's easier to bend to her will than to fight the battle!

Re: Official 'Mother Survival' Thread

This is just the thread I needed! My mother is such an A.D.D. case. Its times like these that I need a supportive mother and instead she's a child that I need to take care of and manage. The only details that she's concerned about are the things that affect her...from our fight today...

1. The same dressmaker is making my dress and hers called me because she only left the deposit for her dress and not mine. We were both at the maker, I see her hand her a check, and she fails to mention that it only covered hers. Not that I expect her to pay it but hello tiny detail you could have told me while we were there. I only found out when the dressmaker called to confirm that I DIDN'T want my dress made!!!

2. She won't come with me to my hair and makeup trial because she's arranging her own!!!

3. She's insisting on making the cake. I tell her that her setting it up will cut into the picture time and she says don't worry I can show up to the pics a little late.

And this is just today! The woman is driving me nuts!

Re: Official 'Mother Survival' Thread

What about pain the *** fathers?

I really love my dad, and we get along really well most of the time, but he's so ridiculous sometimes. He overthinks things and obsesses and won't let things rest... Jeff and I decided to take this past weekend off from hall hunting, and he wouldn't let it drop! Also, Jeff and I had picked a hall and then when I showed my parents they hated it, and listening to them talk, I realized they were making some good points and decided to cancel our booking and keep looking... well, my dad gets all worried that Jeff will think he has 'interfered' or something, and ends up giving us this half hour long lecture on how even though he definitely insists on being involved in the decisions, in the end it's all up to us and what we want, as long as we consider all our options, and how that's the way my dad has always raised us kids, and in the process my dad goes down this long list of all the major decisions I've made that he didn't agree with but let me make anyway... which is basically everything! Where I went to college, where I went to grad school, what degree I'm getting, what path I'm taking to the career I want... Everything! I was so pissed by the time he was done, I basically grabbed Jeff and just jetted out of the house.

The catch is, I live with my parents, so there's no avoiding it. I know my dad really means well, but he's just so good at saying the wrong thing with the best of intentions...
