Official Vegetarian Thread

So I haven't seen one of these, but I thought I'd start one. I don't know how many of you are Veggies out there, but if you are...you know how hard it is to find/cook good meals. So I thought I'd start this thread so we can share some favorite recipes, restaurant suggestions, and /or brand names of good vegetarian food!

Anyone else with me???

Re: Official Vegetarian Thread

I'm a veg! This November marks 16 years of being vegetarian.

FH is also veggie and we're planning a vegetarian wedding.

ETA: I guess because I've been vegetarian for so long, it doesn't seem like it's hard to find good restaurants, recipes and food in the stores. Some of my favorite restaurants aren't vegetarian, just veggie-friendly. However, when it comes to products in the stores, I'm always reading labels. There are a LOT of additives out there that are derived from animal sources and I'm the kind of vegetarian that stays away from those things.

I'm a big fan of Vegetarian Times magazine. A lot of the websites out there don't really draw a line between veggie and vegan recipes; Vegetarian Times does. While I do like vegan food, I am not vegan and do want some more variety in my recipes (ie., dairy and cheese. Love love love cheese).

Goveg.com is great for new vegetarians, or people just looking for some info about vegetarianism. However I will point out that it's part of PETA. I know how controversial PETA can be, so I'm just throwin' it out there that if you go to the site, you will see that it's part of PETA.

I'm not vegetarian, I'm kosher. However, kosher is VERY expensive so I was going to try and have a dairy wedding (no meat, but we will have fish). Can I join too?

I'm worried people (like my brother the carnivore) won't feel satisfied withhout meat. If I offer two different fish options or a pasta dish, do you think people will think I'm being cheap and/or leave unsatisfied. A lot of people I know judge a wedding by the food. The thing is, cheese is my favorite food, so I want to have what I will enjoy at the wedding too!

Re: Official Vegetarian Thread

I am vegetarian too. I have been for 15 years, was never a big meat eater and in fact have had only two hamburgers in my life both which I was forced to eat all the while crying.

I also do not eat sea food. I buy cruelty free products and do not support pet stores as I don't believe in breeding animals when so many are waiting for their homes.

I guess the main reason I don't eat meat is because I love animals so much and could never eat them knowing their fear and terror in their final moments.

However FH eats meat and I am fine with that, I make sure he eats free range organic, it's mostly the slaughterhouses I have a problem with.

Anyone planning on raising Veg children?

Girls, if your FH vegetarian, do you prepare meat? I don't I don't even touch it. Every time I am in a supermarket and walk by meat section I turn away, in my eyes its dead animals that suffered and not meat to eat. I wish people that ate meat would watch all those videos how these cruel people kill them for food and fur!!!! I think if they would, half of them would stop eating meat.

Re: Official Vegetarian Thread

I, too, was never a big meat eater.... I DO NOT eat meat because of the cruelty to animals and have an insane love for ALL animals!!! Lately, things have been changing. I cannot handle meat, cannot take the smell and can barely stand to look at it. I will NOT be preparing meat for my children and will have to supplement their nutrition with soy and tofu so they have a healthy level of protein. It's very difficult but it's do-able. I also LOVE whole foods... best store ever!!! FH eats meat but very minimal...I think I'm actually changing him in that respect! I never want to interfere with people's decisions but it's very difficult to look at. Certain people will ask me if I mind if they order meat when we're out to dinner. It's gotten soo bad that recently, FH ordered steak (ugh!) and I had to rearrange the table and items on the table so I didn't have to look at it. It's really bad... I, too, do not support pet stores...shelters all over are inundated with animals who need homes. I also foster animals and have saved several pregnant cats, let them have their kittens, and then find all of them homes.... It's a very tough situation...One of which is very near and dear to my heart.... It's the one subject I have an ENORMOUS of feelings about and will preach....(and I don't think people appreciate it) but what can ya do?!?!?

This is a tough one because not everyone likes Fish... maybe you can offer ONE meat dish? I don't know -- I have very mixed feelings and since I'm a vegetarian...it's even harder!!!

Re: Official Vegetarian Thread

Yeah! Im so glad there's more of you out there. I've always been borderline vegetarian because of animal treatment and such. What put me over the edge was I have had stomach/digestion issues for years. I changed to organic foods only and my problems got a little better. Then I read Skinny *****....and it changed my life. Sounds stupid but..after reading the chapters on meat...I vowed never to touch it again after reading in detail what is put into animals (hormones, pesticides, antibiotics) and then what they do to them and how they are treated.

Surprise surprise...when I stopped eating alll meats........no more digestive or stomach problems. So not only is my conscious WAY better now that Im a veggie.....my stomach loves me a lot more too. However, I am new to this and cant find many veggie friendly restaurants in my area and keep buying cook books to build up a repertoire of recipes to use!!!

Ladies - please share the reason that you're a Vegetarian....

I'm vegetarian by lifestyle, not by diet. By that I mean that it's not just what goes in my mouth, but that I also won't buy leather shoes, products tested on animals, tickets to the circus, etc. Basically, I cannot differentiate between my cat, who I love tremendously, and the cow that made the hamburger someone is about to eat. Or the elephant performing routines that are unnatural to him/her in the circus. I'd never want my cat treated in that way, so what makes it okay for other animals to be treated that way for food/clothing/entertainment purposes, you know?

While I don't prepare meat - I honestly don't know how to; having become a veg at the age of 12 means that I never really cooked before that in my life - it doesn't bother me when other people eat it in front of me. That might seem strange, given how it encompasses my life in every other way. But I guess in the beginning of my vegetarianism it bothered me...now it doesn't. Yeah, in an ideal world (for me) no one would eat meat...but that's just utopian thinking and completely unrealistic, so I just accept that everyone is different and just let it go. However, if a person asks questions, I'm glad to answer them. Just the other day one of FH's uncles was asking all sorts of questions and after our discussion, I suggested that maybe he tries going vegetarian one day a week and see how it makes him feel...and you know what? He seemed to like the idea. Something like that is non-intrusive and might get people to branch out into other foods that they never would've tried otherwise.

I'm rambling here.

Cherry - Here's their site. You can pick up the magazine in most bookstores or larger newsstands; it's by the cooking mags.

I've never eaten fish or seafood. I have no idea what it tastes like, and I'm 10000000% okay with that.
