I'm going to China on business (long story). I was supposed to only go for a week - I just saw the revised schedule and they have now scheduled me for an extra week. This means I'm on back-to-back teams for this project we're working on (and means I'll literally work 3 weeks straight without a day off).
Anyway, INSANE work days aside, this means I'll miss the ONLY Valentine's Day we'll be engaged. I've never been big on V-Day at all, but I was really looking forward to what is basically our first real valentine's day together, and the only one we'll have while we're engaged.
I know it's really silly, but I'm really, really upset about it.
I'll be in China from 2/2 - 2/17.

Awe Kara I know what you mean..its sort of sentimental. It's okay, just remember it's just another day and you guys can celebrate when you come back!!

Re: oh no! it might be silly, but I'm really upset
I've already been to China... so honestly I'm not really that excited about it.
Traveling for pleasure IS fun, but traveling for work just means longer hours in another country. Hate to sound so negative, but it really isn't any fun at all, and I will literally be working 7 days a week.
I'm just so disappointed... It's not like my FH is a big romantic by any stretch. He's a good guy, but romance doesn't come so easy for him. I don't see him going out of his way to celebrate when I get back... though I guess it's our only option. I won't even be back the weekend after V-day. I'll be coming home on Sunday - and probably not feeling so romantic after 23 straight days of work and a 16 hour flight.
Ugh, sorry. I'm really trying not to be so negative, but I'm sooooooooo disappointed. Maybe when the shock wears off I'll feel better.
Thanks for the support.

awwww...that's not silly at all, i'd be upset too!!
but think about it this way, valentine's day is on a weeknight. you'll be coming back on a saturday. you two can celebrate that night, and you can do whatever you want, have a few drinks, and have fun without having to worry about work the next day. and you'll be so happy to see each other after being apart for a few weeks, you might not even care that it's not the 14th.
just an idea...sorry you're sad!!

Nope, won't be home until Sunday... but you do have a point.
I was just so looking forward to this and now that I know it won't happen (and I'm pretty confident FH won't be planning anything special when I get back b/c he's not big on stuff like this), I can't stop crying.
It's so stupid, if it were ANY other year, I'd be saying how much I hate V-day. lol.

I'm sorry to hear that Kara!!!!! I know its probably impossible, but can you try to tell your firm that you just can't extend yourself for the extra week?

Awww- that stinks but it'll work out. After all, Valentine's day is just a day and you can just celebrate it when you get back. That happened to us also, (similar situation) and hubby sent me roses while he was away and we celebrated when he got back. It actually made things easier b/c there weren't lines like there are when ppl go out on vday (and our fav. restaurant won't take reservations on any day like that). I know it seems awful but it'll be over before you know it and you'll be back and celebrating!!!

That DOES stink. BUT, V-Day is on a Wednesday this year anyway. What if you celebrate when you get home on the 17th or 18th? You'll have the full day together to enjoy yourselves!

Valentine's Day is just a day on the calendar, like any other day. It's only special when you and someone you love do nice things for each other on that day. So, make a date with your FH to have a romantic, special day when you get back. You'll have just as much fun.
Aaaaannnddd... the candy and teddy bears will be 50% off.

Re: oh no! it might be silly, but I'm really upset
Thanks, all.
I understand that celebrating when I get back is an option, but... I'm still upset about it.
Also, I don't actually get home until Sunday -- and after 21 straight days of work, having to go into work on Monday (ugh! don't even ask), and a 16 hour flight (more like 24 hours door-to-door), celebrating that weekend just won't happen.
Oh well... Nothing I can do about it. I just had to vent. This *****.
We're both so overworked right now it's crazy. We never see each other. My FH (an engineer) has to work 6 full days a week for the next two months (and he's already been doing it for a month) and I'm working 6 days a week now, too... Once this comes up, I'll be working 7 days a week and will be gone for more than 2 weeks.
I'm just tired of us working all the time and am frustrated that we can't even do something as simple as eating dinner together at home on Valentine's Day. I didn't even want to go out or do anything crazy.
But I guess there's no use complaining about something I can't control. I just need to vent!
Thanks, ladies. I'm sorry to be so negative.

You're not being silly and you're not being negative. You're upset and you're allowed to be.
Just try to remind yurself that even thuogh you may not be with him on the day of, you still have a wonderful FH to come home to. How lucky you are to have found someone you care abuot so much that you can get this upset!!
I don't know if that helps, but

Not silly! Just plan something before AND after and make it you and your FH's day

Re: oh no! it might be silly, but I'm really upset
Sorry to hear about you missing V-day with your FH. That sux.
Try not to let it get you down though.
When we were still in school our favorite restraunt did a super expensive V-day price fix. So we always re-dated V-date to a week night (when the prices were lower). It sounds silly now, but its true and all the candy was 1/2 off. It was a great and special day regardless of the date.
It doesn't have to be the weekend you get back, (jetlag and all). push it back as far as you want. Just don't forget about it, because I can tell it's important to you.
PS. I feel your pain, as evidenced by me being in the office right now at noon on a sat.
Oh one more thing......be sure to explain how you feel and then make a big deal out of the the new date you plan on celebrating. (like everytime you speak to him on the phone say 'I can't wait to celebrate v-day w/ you on March 3rd' or whatever). Because sometimes men forget if they're not reminded, (especially if they're not romantic like my FH)

Re: oh no! it might be silly, but I'm really upset
Thanks, winterwhite. I really appreciate it.
A partner I am working for on an unrelated matter just told me that Feb. 18th is Chinese New Year, so if I am still there on that date, that would be pretty exciting.
Oh well, this will REALLY boost my billable hours for the year. (The lawyers know what I'm talking about!!)

Re: oh no! it might be silly, but I'm really upset
Sorry to hear, Kara. I completely understand how work can get in the way of things you're really looking forward to. My gig almost forced me to cancel my week trip with FW to California (we're driving down 1 from SF to SD).
It's true that we guys aren't always the best at remembering, but that said, I'm sure if FH knows how bummed you are about missing it, I have faith that you and him will have a great celebration of some kind on your return.
It's funny because while on a lot of stuff, I'm totally a guy's guy (sports, whiskey, poker, swearing, adam sandler movies and whatnot), but I am a bit of a romantic as well... meanwhile, FW is totally unsentimental, so if I went too nuts with something it would be wasted on her. :lol
do you atleast get any comp time for working three weeks straight? Those clowns should make it worth your while.
sorry you're missing it. I'm sure you'll have a great celebration soon.

That really stinks. My FH was in Singapore for our first real Valentine's day but he made it up to me by bringing me home some amazing jewelry. I'm sure you two will find a way to celebrate in a special way anyhow.

I'm sorry that stinks.. I am a RN and my FI works nights we may not be able to spend our last engaged V day together either. We are definitely celebrating whether it's that day or another. You should have a belated V Day too. Good Luck on your trip and have a safe flight.
