One of my all time favorite movie quotes, that I think is appropriate here:
(from American President): 'President Andrew Shepherd: You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil who is standing center stage advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.'
I love that movie and that quote!!!!

a little off topic, but has anyone seen the psuedo documentary about George Bush and the role faith plays in his politics?
It's called 'George W. Bush - Faith in the White House.' It was made by a republican funded organization and the Republican Party was shipping about 100,000 to churches across america.
It uses actors to portray Bush through the years. . . it's supposed to be somewhat of a response to fahrenheit 9/11.
I haven't seen it - has anyone?

Re: Oh the controversy! Now that Fahrenheit 9/11 is out on DVD..
Ok, a few random points
#1 It is a documentary. A documentary doens't have to show 'both sides' in my opinion. A documentary states facts, and almost always takes one side or another. I'll admit, Moore didn't mitigate any of his accusations, but I don't think he had to.
#2 The movie doesn't pain democrats any rosier than it paints republicans. it's about the repubs because they're in power. I'm sure Moor could make a movie that could be seen as him hating Kerry. He's not in love with John Kerry or any politicians, but his opinion is that a regime change is in order, and I agree with him.
#3 If you come out of the movie loving Bush more, (I can't see how it's possibe, but then again i can't see how supporting bush in the first place is possible, but I respect it), then good for you. Everyone's going to take what they want from the film, and that's the cool thing about art
#4 I've seen some of the extra footage. They showed some of Condi's testominy before the 9/11 comission, which I watched on CSPan and it is sort of frightening.
They talked about how Bush only agreed to talk to the 9/11 comission if it was informla, not broadcast, never repeated, and Cheney could e there. They showed an interview with Bush after said meeting and him stammering over trying not to answer any questions
There is a short fi;m with Arab comedians talking about how they have dealt with the backlash from 9/11. I thought that was really cool.
There's a scene showing people in Iraq before the occupation, and how clear it was that they would NOT see the US as liberators...etc... I haven't seen it all yet, but it seems worth seeing.
ETA: There's also a soldier's eye witness account, whch I have not watched yet.
#5 I also wanted to say that it's not a move about 9/11. if it were I would not have watched it. On 9/11 every year since after 2002, I won't turn on a TV or opena newspaper on that day. I just can't bear to relive that footage over and over again as we did in the months following 9/11. I must have seen it 300 times that day. I don't need to see it again. it's burned into my brain, along with imaged of my frineds and teachers from high school shown on TV running down the west side highway. I don't need to see it again. This movie has shortscene about 9/11, but it mercifully does not show the plans hitting the buildings. I don't think I can bear to ever see that again.

Re: Oh the controversy! Now that Fahrenheit 9/11 is out on DVD..
After Moore's acceptance at the Oscars I refused to watch Bowling for Columbine. My reasoning was that I felt that his speech was totally inappropriate . My brother watched Bowling and begged me to watch it saying that although Moore can be an a**hole he makes some interesting points and it can open your mind.
Since I consider myself to be a very open minded person I decided to watch it. I thought it was ok. I wasn't blown away by it but he did bring up very interesting factual points. However, he also only shows you what he wants to show you. I've heard that he edits the whole Heston thing to make it like Heston was in CO. right after the Columbine incident when in truth it was either sometime before or sometime after-I don't remember which right now. I feel that when you watch movies like this you can't take it for too much. Moore only wants you to see one side so that's all he's going to show you. I can't watch one of his movies and think he's a god or that I should live by what he says. It's just his opinion and he's just putting it out there to get his view point heard.
I will watch F/911 because I hear it's an excellent movie and it's worth seeing. Is it going to change my vote? No, I wouldn't let a movie change my vote. But what it will do is show me a different view. One that I can't see in other forms of media.

Re: Oh the controversy! Now that Fahrenheit 9/11 is out on DVD..
I saw it on a boot-leg, it didn't change my mind about anything. My poor view of Michael Moore has nothing to do w/ my political stand point, I haven't liked him since Bowling for Columbine. I have no respect for him because of that movie. But that's just my opinion. I think it's fine to watch it, no matter what your political view is...as long as you watch it with an open mind, an intelligent mind, and also keep in mind that it is just a movie. I would be even more interested in seeing what made the cutting room floor! Not to get anyone worked up or anything, but anyone can make a movie that maintains a particular point of view if they have directorial control. That's not my opinion, that is a fact.

I am trying to prove a point here...
Ok, a few random points

response: something a bout a documentary...it has to be UNBIASED...which it is not, and does not qualify. If it is factual, it must state all of the facts, which is does not. And how are we determining that the majority of this IS factual, because it's up on a screen? If Moore was so prefessional and so interested in maintaining that this movie was a documentary, why was it filled with one sided opinions. Check out real documentaries, you see they report news, not opinions.
THIS IS JMO: anyone who votes for someone just based on the fact that they are not the other person really is not making an educated decision. If someone feels that Kerry has strong points, then that's great...vote for him. I would like someone to tell me what though, because I honestly can't figure it out.
#3 If you come out of the movie loving Bush more, (I can't see how it's possibe, but then again i can't see how supporting bush in the first place is possible, but I respect it), then good for you. Everyone's going to take what they want from the film, and that's the cool thing about art
I agree w/ don on this one. Plus, if someone is going to base their decision on a movie, again, not the smartest thing to do. Weigh both sides. If you still want to vote for Kerry, go ahead. No one should be telling anyone who they should vote for. And honestly, everyone should keep this as a private matter. Those who strongly support Bush are going to support Bush, and the same goes for Kerry. No movie, no discussion on a chat board is really going to change anyone's mind.
#4 I've seen some of the extra footage. They showed some of Condi's testominy before the 9/11 comission, which I watched on CSPan and it is sort of frightening.

ETA: There's also a soldier's eye witness account, whch I have not watched yet.
First of all, if you read the newspapers from way back when when Iraq was taken over, many civilians even reported to the press (it was in Newsday) that at first they were very excited about it. Some did switch sides though because change did not happen as fast as they would have liked...
Second, as a future SLP, I really resent the whole stammering thing. I understand he is president and certain things are expected of him. But one thing is for sure fluency does not reflect intelligence...I am not always fluent, but I am also very intelligent and even an honors student. I found it laughable that one of the people interviewed after the debate was commenting on Bush's stammering and HE himself was stammering and saying 'uh' and 'um' a million times!
Look, it basicly comes to this...I am not trying to be mean or give anyone a hard time, but can you see how many different ways something can be interpreted when one has a specific stand point? I respect all of your views, both democrat and republican. I would expect that everyone else would respect each other's view as well...even if it differs from yours. There is a reason why there is a curtain surrounding a voting booth. If you feel strongly, then vote. Just make sure you are opening your mind to both sides, rather than having some famous celebrity make the decision for you.
PS: PLEASE, NO ONE TAKE OFFENSE. THIS IS HOW I FEEL, IF YOU THINK I AM WRONG, THAT'S FINE AND ALL...BUT WE ALL MUST LEARN TO RESPECT EACH OTHER'S VIEWS.

Re: Oh the controversy! Now that Fahrenheit 9/11 is out on DVD..
I absolutely do not believe that a documentary has to be 'unbiased.' Everything I've learned from taking courses on documentary fi;mmaking and photograhy have told me the total opposite. I believe it was Leni Reifensthal (can't spell) who said 'Art is a Hammer, Not A Mirror' I wrote that down in my documentaries class and remembered it ever since. I really don't think it's possible for a documentary to be unbiased, and if it werem it would probably be damn boring.
My comment about Bush's stammering was not about any speech impediments he may or may not have, but about the fact that he really didn't seem to know how to answer the questions put forth to him.
And about voting for 'the other guy' most people will probably agree that politics IS about choosing the lesser of two evils most of the time. there is never going to be a perfect candidate who you agree with completely and who is always honest. It just doens't happen, so you just have to choose the one who isless evil and more likely to champion your causes.
One of the best additional scenes is one of the iraqi people before the invasion. it showed theit perfecty normal lifestyle and how much they did not want the war, and did not see the American forces as liberators.
ETA: Moore does present the facts in his documentaries. All of what he presents is documented. it is presented in a way that reflects his own opinion (all news is presented ina way t express the opinion of the write, editor, etc), but he never bends or distorts the truth (based on my research). I think that counts as a documentary. If you want to be completely unbiased, then you probably don't ahve anything to say. if you have nothing to say, why make a documentary at all? hat's one way of looking at it.

I saw Bowling for Columbine and made my decision about MM then. However, I chose to see F 9/11 because I honestly wanted to see what the fuss was about. I do have an open mind, after all.
First of all, and again this is my opinion that I am not asking anyone to share. I felt that he was seriously exploiting the columbine kids, and actually, come to think of it...he was also exploiting the grief of the poor mother who lost her son in Iraq. Again my opinion. I think he is shadey the way he handled the whole Charlton Heston thing. I thought his little 'commentaries' completely underminded his whole 'documentary' facad. Again, when you present a documentary, you present the facts. Once you start adding your opinion, you are no longer producing a documentary. One thing I would like to point out is his personality...which is how I came to the conclusion he was an a$$hole. You don't really need to KNOW someone, up front and in person to KNOW their personality. If you see/hear that person enough, you get the jist of what they are like. For example. I am actually a little surprised no one ever brings this up...how does one sign up for the military...does anyone know? How many people you know in the military get signed up by their parents? Aside from the movie, he went on HARDBALL and asked the interviewer if he would sign his children up for the military. I REALLY liked the interviewers response...he said 'no I can't do that, but I WILL GO TO IRAQ!!!' MM does not present facts, he presents opinions. And he has a right to those opinions and all. And it's not the reason why I don't like him. His personality sucks! He exploits people! And he wastes everyones time trying to make a point that is obviously not proven by what he is doing. In the movies he tries to play off that he is FIGHTING for these people. Give me a break...so why is he not giving all this money he's making to soldier's families. Or the families/kids from Columbine. He's laughing all the way to the bank, because people out there will believe anything that is thrown in their face. I saw both movies. Did not like either. It did not change my view of Bush, because I know there is stuff you are not going to see. Yes there are problems in this world. Do you really need MM to help you figure that out??? If you want want to know, you know...if you have been living in a cave or something...try CNN...news 24 hrs a day. And if he actually wants to resolve the real issues, he should concentrate on how many children are emotionally and physically abused by their classmates are out there that think this is the only way to go. How about correcting THAT!!! How about addressing the fact that long before Bush (saying this so he will not be blamed) psychiatric hospitals all over the country are closed...you know, where psychologically disturbed individuals who would shoot, torture, etc others SHOULD be. Or hey, why not expose why Clinton did not grab Bin Laden after the '93 WTC attack, when he had him...but CLINTON is a democrat, can't do that! Don't get offended anyone, I am having a good time!

Because if you are going to give people the story, shouldn't you give people all of it? Documentaries are not ment to be put out just for entertainment purposes, otherwise it would be a regular movie. They are put out to inform. ie other documentaries. If his arguement is so weak that giving the whole story will go against his purpose, then that's where the problem lies. You have just proven my point. I am just saying, that maybe those who are so up on f 9/11, go do further research about the stuff that MMdid not agree w/ and therefore cut out. It's great that you have studied documentaries, but that does not qualify as support for his purpose in this film. And I am not saying that his opinion, like everyone else's, shouldn't matter. I am just saying, if you are going to use F 9-11 as your referance in picking a canidate, then do us all a favor and don't vote. If you hear things that you like about Kerry, then that is a reason to vote for Kerry. If you like things about Bush, vote for Bush. Why does everyone care??? But I have not yet heard one thing that people can say to support Kerry. It is not about picking the less of 2 evils, when you don't know what someone is even going to do for you. Here's the scoop...I am a registered democrat. I hear Kerry say he can do better than Bush. I have watched the debate, I have kept up w/ newspapers, TV, etc. Kerry has not yet outlined HOW he intends to do a better job. I know where Bush stands, the issues that are important to me...well, I like the way Bush handles it. That's how I came to my decision. Not saying you should vote the same, but be educated enough to know what you are getting the whole country into.

Where did you hear that? Clinton did, back in '93. If we would have gotten him then, 9-11 would not have happened.
