I hear it's some sort of stamping process you or the post office person does at the office so your invites don't go thru a machine.

Basically instead of going through 3 machines to be scanned it goes through 2 i believe. The reasons people do this is when scanned it gets an extra stamp. I didnt do hand canceling and i sent one to myself and it looks fine to me.

I hand cancelled because the PO manager told me she would suggest it. She advised that it saves some wear and tear on the invites. It was NO trouble at all either! I brought the invites to the post office and handed them over! Don't know if it made such a dfiference - but It was easy!

I hand cancelled my STD's because they were pillow envelopes. The guy at the post office gave me the stamp and I did them all myself. I just figured that i would treat my homemade STD's better than some postal worker.

When you put the stamps on the invitations, you take them to the post office, and ask to have them hand cancelled....this means that they don't slide it through a machine to post mark it. They individually stamp each one (or let you do it) It looks nicer b/c it goes on straight (not crooked) and also prevents your invitation from getting bent in the machine.
