So my grandfather is throwing a suprise 70th birthday for my grandma down in Fla. The whole family will be there. I was just telling the Future in laws & their friends that we were not going. FI and I can't take any days off of work, so we would basically have to fly in Sat for the party, then leave first thing Sunday morning. I feel like that is crazy to do something like that, and FI said he doesn't think it is worth it to fly all the way there for not even a day!
So the FIL's (who i love and adore, and usually always give good advice) gave me this HUGE guilt trip that I was being this awful granddaughter for not going, and that I should do everything in my power to get down there because she won't always be around and it would probably mean a lot for me to be there, yadda yadda yadda and I am just making excuses. I was just there for thanksgiving, so i just saw my Fla. family, and it is SO draining to do something like that for such a short amount of time...especially when dealing with my family! And I have a lot of work to do here at home... So, now I just don't know what to do! THat guilt trip they just laid on me was huge. Any advice? Am I being awful and selfish and just making excuses, or do you guys think it's ok for us to not go? HELP!

Re: OK, I just got a MAJOR guilt trip...HELP!
When I first read through this - I thought it was your FH's grandfather. So your Future ILs are giving you guilt over your own grandmother's party? LOL ! You poor thing. I think it would be great if you could go but you should only go if you want too. Would your grandma understand? I'm sure she would. I don't think you're being selfish, you're being practical. If you could figure out a way to fly in on a Friday night and come back Sunday afternoon maybe that would space it out more.
You should talk to your family - not FH's - even though they are close to you - I'm sure they don't know grandma and grandpa well enough yet to make judgements on their feelings if you didn't go.
