Lauren, no one is saying you can't love your house, but you have to seriously stop talking like we are imbeciles because we are saying that some houses look like trailers. I mean, the eyes don't decieve, some of these are pieces of garbage that don't need a mortgage they need a bulldozer. Whether you are pricing or not, that can't be debated. So love your house all you want, if it's a 2 bedroom cape with the original flooring and windows, I am not paying you 350 for it.

Right Lauren - You HAVE to consider the value of the land. People may think it is crazy to pay $360 for a ranch in this inflated market but I know with near certainty that I can turn around TODAY and get $415K for my house for the SIMPLE REASON, that it is in Syosset!!
People , especially those with or wanting families, want that school district and they will tear down my house and build another one if they want to.

Its on oceanside, its actually not a bad price. I may go look at it, with a little TLC, it can become a princess.
Look I dont know why peopel are getting so wacked out. Who the hell cares, no one was saying you live in **** or bought ****. Truth is the average joe schmos are all buying capes that have 3 bedroom a 40 x 100 plot of land and paying top dollar.

Misty, you first have to love what it looks like IMO, we have looked at some homes and I refuse to go in b/c of the 'look' I am not looking at a dump of a home and thinking boy look at that land, no one does. Everyone is looking at it and going, how much more money do we have to invest in it to make it what we want.

Lauren, I just feel like the post was not meant to say 'ewww this house is gross' but more along the lines of look at the market in NY compared to the rest of the country. I mean I could have probably bought 2 houses in Florida and a condo for what I paid for my fixer upper here.
I think people are being over sensitive to the post.
I thought that was the point. Just to look at the market in NY. At least that is why I thought the thread was fun. Being a homeowner and NOT living in NY/LI, it is interesting to me to see the different prices of homes. I don't think it was meant to have any offense.

whether its a 2 bedroom or a 5 bedroom.. if your house was posted on this site as called a trailor, you'd be taken aback as well, no? like others on the board, i own a cape and there were comments about people spending boatloads of money on capes without even having seen the inside or knowing the area. is that fair?

RLivings, I am not nor do I think anyone else is disagreeing with you.
I bought a house in franklin Square, the taxes are over 7K and the friggin plot is 50X100 . I bought the house because it has potential and I like the school district there. Every house on the block is in GREAT shape.. Mine is the shittiest house there, so fixing it will only increase the value..
That being said, I dont find anything offending by this post.. I think it was fun and I even showed frank some of the homes here vs some of the ones posted out of state..
I think sometimes people read WAY WAY WAY more into a post than they should.
If you love your house and your happy, what does it matter what people say here about a house that you dont even own that only resembles what you bought?

Yes, it is cheaper to do just that. BUT, the house that is sitting on the land is driving that price up. So now I have to pay that much for a ****-shack....and then on Long Island, OVER-pay to re-build because the cost of materials and labor on Long Island is very inflated. Not to mention paying thousands for the removal of the crap that was there in the first place.
It's over-inflated crap, no matter how you look at it. But, I will keep looking until I find what is worth it in MY eyes, and I will not be afraid to say that many of the houses on this post AREN'T worth it. Period.
ETA: If I bought a house that looked like a trailer, I wouldn't be offended, no. One thing that you can't have as a person looking for a home is poop in your eyes, or else you'll wind up with a money pit...which MOST of what we have seen are! I've seen too many people jump into buying a home because it was in the vicinity of the right price (edited from cheap because they weren't) and they thought they could make it something they wanted. They wind up spending and spending and getting nowhere fast, all while their boilers are breaking, they are flooding left and right...

Wow this did get really bad. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. How many times have we been through this.
I will have to agree with Joe's Lauren and rivlings that the chance of someone owning a house like one that someone posted as a piece of s h it is possible and maybe we should be more careful about what we say.
Shamma you are right it isn't the house itself that makes it a home. But some people have made comments on here that make people feel that their home (looking like a trailor) or how they could afford it (i.e. help from parents etc.) makes it less of a home and that they shouldn't be proud of it and that isn't right.
Those kind of things hurt and people have to be ready for the backlash when that happens.

Ok, yes this thread might hurt someone's feelings because of things said about a house that looks like theirs. I personally saw some the houses and was like 'hmm I'd live there' but I did not take offense. The thread was created for fun to let people vent about the crazy prices on long island.
These houses that are going for $400,000 now would have been going to less that $150,000 about 5 years ago. Thats what I beleive is trying to be conveyed in this thread.
To thoses that were offended, Jenn apologized (which she really didn't have too because it wasn't personal).
To those that think people who don't own houses have no clue. I'm sure you didn't mean it how it was sounded but the words you choose should have been different. I do not own a house but I did and sold it years ago and have plenty of knowledge on the subject. And honestly even if i didn't, you don't have to have an MBA in Real Estate to have an opinion.

Syosset is a great neighborhood and the prices are nuts! I will visit your trailer anytime. I may have a CH Colonial but the school is not near as good as where you live and you would die if you knew what we paid!!! You made a great investment...ENJOY IT!
