and for the record, i did say before that unless one if serious about buying real estate and the value of land, then you wouldn't know what prices are good / bad. i also stated that homeowners know the deal bc as a homeowner, you would!

Happy homeownership or land ownership to everyone. A price of a house does not make it a home, neither the beauty of it, makes it a happy home. As long as you can go home to it and pay your bills and still be happy that is all that matters.

Rachel, I pray each and every day that I can make our home a happy home, where both hubby and I want to come home to. There are people that have some of the most beautiful homes but they are so unhappy they do not want to go home, or they spend so much time working that they cannot even enjoy it.

I went back and looked at the thread and some of the houses that were posted and IMO I don't get from the postings of anyone that the houses are crap, I think with money, most people expect much more, ie bigger house, more land etc if they are paying that much money. I think some of those home that were posted are pretty good looking.

My mother's house looked like a dump and it was red when they first looked at it, but now it has grown so much in value, just b/c of what they have done cosmetically.

Wow, this thread has made an UNBELIEVABLE turn for the ugly. It was a funny thread.. I am buying a cape that is not in the best shape and is rather small for the HUGE price I am paying, BUt i still found humour in this thread and it was NOT intentionally meant to attack anyone. Jen does NOT know where everyone lives and is not attacking anyone.. There were several people posting on this thread.. but just like any other thread, if you dont like it DONT READ IT!
there were some houses here that kind of resembled what I am buying, but thats the market we are in.

Lets just get along and move on!

Ok. I posted on this thread that I was damn insulted by the prices that some of the homes I went to look at were going for. And I will stand by it.

For the record, I AM A HOMEOWNER. I co-own a very overpriced coop in Long Island. And I will sit here and I WILL ADMIT that I could never live with myself if my parents who own the other half of that coop had to sell it for the price they are going for now. They also admit it. So come off the high 'i own a house' horse, and realize that sometimes the prices are downright insulting. Period. The coop we bought 3 years ago sold to us for a very worth it 85K. Now, it's going for 300K!!!!! That's VERY insulting IMO, for no more than a 2 BR apt. My parents agree, everyone around the area agrees, that if someone were to walk in and buy one of these things at this price right now (which they are doing, all the time), they would be NUTS because they will never be able to unload it and get anymore for it.

Now, when someone asks 450K for a 3 bedroom crap shack, the likes of which I have seen MANY MANY MANY times in our CURRENT search for a home, in very good areas, I find it crazy, because in 10 years, in a lot of cases, no matter what the area, we will NEVER be able to get that money back on the house, after all the CRAP we had to do to it to make it even liveable.

Sorry if you feel insulted or slighted, that was NOT the intent of this thread. The intent came from people who are currently looking, and are being priced out by people thinking way too highly of their shag carpet and unfinished wood floors. We are frustrated, fed up, and yes, sometimes very insulted. But please do not come off like we don't know what we are talking about. Believe me when I tell you I do.

It amazes me how people flap off at the mouth to feel self-important.

I can't believe how this thread ended up. I have to say I was offended from the beginning with this thread which is why I stayed quiet.

I agree w/ Lauren on that statement I never opened this thread or posted till today for that reason, I only did today b/c someone 'directed' me to it

I dont think jenn started the thread to make drama but you cant call some of these houses trailers b/c lets face it....... we/ most of us live on long island and it could be one of our houses or a friends house etc................

and that house on page 3 is a good price! most of the houses in plainview look like that! and are priced a lot higher

its also obvious that people who do not like certain people attack them and their comments though and that really isnt nice.....

Threads turn ugly because people read things into them that was never there in the first place. no one ever said that Jenn did anything 'intentionally'. Any thread can be read by anyone at anytime and people can post comments whether everyone will agree or not.

It was just another opinion being added. What should I have done, stayed quiet? Posted on a separate thread. No. Just because everyone doesn't agree doesn't mean the thread needs to go on LOCKDOWN or anything. Intelligent minds will differ.

PLus, some good came of it like the comments about a house is, what it is filled with on the INSIDE!!

Suzanne, I agree with you in the sense that it's not an attack on anyone personally but it was bound to happen that someone would be offended by what was posted.... prices and words. And it happened today. I knew it would happen one day.

I think the thread got blown a little out of proportion. Real Estate in LI and alot of places in NY is very inflated and when we were house-hunting I found properties which were rundown AND in less than desirable neighborhoods in the 300K+ range.

We just happened to luck out on our cape, no it is not my dream home, but it is in a SAFE neighborhood and in a good school district

Lauren, I just feel like the post was not meant to say 'ewww this house is gross' but more along the lines of look at the market in NY compared to the rest of the country. I mean I could have probably bought 2 houses in Florida and a condo for what I paid for my fixer upper here.

I think people are being over sensitive to the post.

bottom line is that all of these homes were posted and comments were made about the outsides of these homes. there may have been one or two that posted with what may have been the insides of the homes, but to form an opinion solely onb the looks of the exterior is just wrong!
owning a home or not owning a home... i stated that unless someone is serious about buying, they wouldn't know what is a good price vs. a bad price. it's not about being on a high horse!!!! and again, i stated that homeowners would know since they do own a home! big difference in saying that as opposed to ONLY HOMEOWNERS KNOW... which was NEVER stated!

suzanne - to say that something resembles a trailer is an insult in my book. that's just not right. i own my nest and love it to pieces and just proud that i am able to have my home.

misty - it goes beyond what the price of the house is though. it's the land what is purchased with the home.
ETS: every single house, piece of crap or whatever it may be has potential bc of the land it sits on. it's cheaper to build a home from scratch than to buy brand new
