Ok lets start talking w/a controversial topic!

Original post by Toucan311

Ok, so maybe its not really controversial, but I'm sure some of you have an opinion on it.

A girl that I work with is a hardcore athiest. She doesnt believe in God, Jesus, etc. She is NOT agnostic, she believes that there is just NOTHING. Which is totally fine; everyone is entitled to their own belief system. What drives me crazy about this? SHE CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS. Does this irk anyone else?

As a side note, this is EXACTLY the reason why I thought, a few years ago when they were throwing the idea around, that 9/11 should NOT be made a national holiday. Just like Memorial Day, in a few years it would just be another reason to have big Sales at the mall. It makes me sad when holidays - religous or otherwise - lose their true meaning! And I'm not excluding myself. I know that I usually spend my Memorial Day at a bbq, not remembering soldiers who have died in battle.

i think that happy holidays is the appropriate thing to say - otherwise it is quite presumptuous that everyone you are serving is christian

well that's my whole point. I'm not assuming they're christian, nor am i christian, but if it's Dec 24, I'm wishing you a happy Christmas. I'm 99% sure you're off from work tomorrow, so enjoy it!
EVERYTHING closes for christmas. I feel that for people who are NOT christian/catholic, they would want to celebrate too, since everyone is off

If it's only for Christians, than why does the whole USA basically close on Dec 25?
Passover is a religious holiday, yet nothing is closed for it.

things are closed because MOST of the world celebrates it
MOST of the world does NOT celebrate Passover
of course christmas is for christians
if you live near me, the jewish owned business are open on dec 25 and CLOSED on ALL jewish holidays AND every saturday

we live in the tri state area, with a large Jewish population
in most other states, schools are NOT closed for the jewish holidays as they are here

ok so you kept saying the most of the world celebrates Christmas. I honestly did not realize the difference between all of the religions. Look what I found:

1) Christians - 2,116,909,552 (which includes 1,117,759,185 Roman Catholics, 372,586,395 Protestants, 221,746,920 Orthodox, and 81,865,869 Anglicans)
2) Muslims - 1,282,780,149
3) Hindus - 856,690,863
4) Buddhists - 381,610,979
5) Sikhs - 25,139,912
6) Jews - 14,826,102

And...

a) Others - 814,146,396
b) Non-Religious - 801,898,746
c) Atheists - 152,128,701

right
so there are other religions however there are more christians as one group than any other ONE single group of religious people

there may be more of 'others' combined; however they are not in the 'western' world
buddhists, muslim, hidu etc are mostly in asia

I lived in Atlanta for 3 years after college. Most people down there are either first or southern baptist. But anyway, there's like, no jewish ppl. When the friends I made down there found out I was jewish I became like a museum exhibit. They has so many questions because it was this rare thing....they never had off from school on jewish holidays. The only one they'd even heard of was hanukkah but only because it usually happened right around christmas. It was actually kind of funny.

I dunno... I think my issue w/this person in particular is that she's outspoken about being anti-religion and implies that ppl that do believe in something (christianity, judiasm, ANYTHING) are naive and stupid. Makes me want to shove a christmas tree right up her athiest a$$.
