Ok lets start talking w/a controversial topic!

Original post by Toucan311

Ok, so maybe its not really controversial, but I'm sure some of you have an opinion on it.

A girl that I work with is a hardcore athiest. She doesnt believe in God, Jesus, etc. She is NOT agnostic, she believes that there is just NOTHING. Which is totally fine; everyone is entitled to their own belief system. What drives me crazy about this? SHE CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS. Does this irk anyone else?

It doesn't irk me....i think she should be allowed to celebrate whatever holiday she wants.
My mother is Jewish (dad is Catholic), and she celebrates Christmas! She loves to decorate and cook and bake for her loved ones...She sees it as a time for family to be together, and basically celebrate life and family. My parents have lots of people over on Christmas, Jewish and Catholic. I think everyone should celebrate Christmas as a time of loving and giving.

Also, the world revolves around Christmas for 2-3 months, companies close, vacations are forced, and everything is closed on Dec 25, so what else IS there to do on that day but celebrate!?!!

btw, i would probably be considered agnostic.

I think its different. Your mom is not insulting the religion and then celebrating a part of it. My step father is Jewish and celebrates XMas with us too. The fact that she goes out of her way to insult it and then lights her tree is ridiculous to me.

Yeah, exactly. I have a good friend at work who is Jewish, but she married a Catholic man and they raised their children Catholic. She never converted, and she celebrates both Jewish and Christian holidays. Although Christianity is not her belief system, she would never insult it in anyway, and I wouldnt think twice of being annoyed about her celebrating the holiday. Of course not. Its more about this other girls blatent insult of all religion and then the hypocrisy of celebrating ANY holiday!

NOW, what IRKS me is this:

People who get insulted when you say 'Have a Merry Christmas!' and they expect you to say 'Happy Holidays' because they are Jewish or whatever (Growing up in a half Jewish family has showed me that Jews love to complain, btw) If I say Merry Chrismas, I am wishing you a Happy Dec 25 and the surrounding season.

So if you're insulted when i wish you a merry Christmas, then forget you, I hope you have a crappy Dec 25! I hope your car breaks down, and your dinner burns!

i understand what you are saying, but if someone knows that someone else is 100% jewish, WHY would u wish them a merry christmas??

i wouldnt say happy chanukah to someone i know is christian

This is going to sound strange but this season I have been very jealous of people of other faiths. I feel that they are able to celebrate their holidays without all of this disgusting commercialism and materialism surrounding it. No one is claiming that Yom Kippur isn't religious its just a day off from school ( just to use a dumb example ). It must be refreshing to celebrate religious holidays AS religious holidays.

Yes, I do think Santa is great for kids and I love going to see the tree in Manhattan. I love picking out gifts for my family and friends because I love to see how happy they are when they open them. But more than anything I appreciate when I am in church with other people REALLY understanding and appreciating what the season is about. . .

I think that if someone did think I was Jewish and wished me a Happy Hanukah that I'd just say thank you and move on, rather than point out that I'm not Jewish...

I avoid this by not being nice to anyone in the month of December so as not to insult any religious group

I'm sure this will be met poorly, BUT, I've decided that I am not going to teach my children (if I have any) about Santa. I think that they should know from a young age that Christmas is celebrating the Birth of Christ!

Of course I'll also teach them not to spill the beans to their friends!

I think Kwanzaa is mostly about food, right? I enjoy food so you can wish me a Happy Kwanzaa anytime!

i'm not talking about people you know. My Jewish side of my family gets 'Happy Holidays ' cards, as opposed to 'Merry Christmas' ones....

But if you're in a store or restaurant, as either an employee or customer, and it's the week or Eve of Christmas, and you say Merry Christmas, I think it's appropriate.
But people are touchy, so as a waitress working for tips, I'll only say Merry Christmas if they are wearing a cross or xmas pins or something, or if they say it first. Otherwise I say Holidays, and it kills me, but it would affect my tips so i have to.

btw, good job Heather, you got us talking. lol

So do you religious girls think its hypocritical if people celebrate Xmas and dont go to mass the eve of Xmas?

i think that happy holidays is the appropriate thing to say - otherwise it is quite presumptuous that everyone you are serving is christian

I think that is an innovative idea and I love it! I wouldn't be able to do it myself.

Maybe you can teach them about Saint Nicholas and giving gifts in his tradition or something like that

In my house on Christmas Eve the youngest child puts baby Jesus in the manger and we even sing Happy Birthday to him. We light all of the candles of advent.

On Christmas morning no one opens a single present until we go to Church in the morning and then if its not too cold we go to the cemetary. After that we wait until everyone is together until we open our gifts. No waking up at 6AM and tearing into gifts for us as children!

When I first saw the inflatable Nativity on someone's lawn I was so disgusted and offended by my super religious mom was so happy that people were actually remembering what the holiday was about - so I have become more accepting of them! We try to incorporate religious ornaments into our tree and of course we keep our Nativity set up. . .

No, I don't think so. Personally, I do attend Mass on Christmas. But I think that there are other ways of expressing the ideas of love, charity, etc around this time of year, and that you don't necessarily have to be IN church to have the spirit of the season.

I am so glad I am not the only one who feels this way!!!!!!!! Yes if I know you are a specific religion I probably won't wish you a merry christmas or happy quanza -- but if I don't know what you are I am going to wish you a Merry Christmas. Why -- (1) because that is what I celebrate so it is only natural (2) lets face it Christmas is a holiday but it is also an entire season.

I don't get insulted when people wish me a Happy Hanachuka (sp?) I just replied with same to you! I personally take it as someone wishing me a happy holiday SEASON!

I actually bought my own nativity for this year, but everyone in the Holy Family is a cat. Do you think thats sacreligous? I wasn't sure! The Baby Jesus is a little orange kitten, and it was too cute not to buy!

i dont think its stupid that she celebrates christmas and it doesnt bother me at all.....im not a hardcore athiest but i dont really believe in the catholic religion or jesus or god....but i do believe in spirits and maybe an afterlife....but anyway back to the point - i am totally anti-religion and jesus and I celebrate Christmas and i LOVE LOVE LOVE Christmas - i love Christmas so much that I am having a Holiday Wedding .....i dont think there is anything wrong with that.....i celebrate Christmas because its fun, and i love exchanging presents with the people that i love, and getting together with family, and decorating and it just puts me in a good mood.....for me Christmas is a state of mind - its being thankful for what you have, its being generous, and its romantic, and its fun surprising people with gifts, and its about doing things for people because you love them for ME it has NOTHING to do with Jesus being born....Christmas is a commecialized holiday and i dont think there is anything wrong with that it gets people together, it makes people happy, and i dont think there is anything bad about that

well that's my whole point. I'm not assuming they're christian, nor am i christian, but if it's Dec 24, I'm wishing you a happy Christmas. I'm 99% sure you're off from work tomorrow, so enjoy it!
EVERYTHING closes for christmas. I feel that for people who are NOT christian/catholic, they would want to celebrate too, since everyone is off

If it's only for Christians, than why does the whole USA basically close on Dec 25?
Passover is a religious holiday, yet nothing is closed for it.
