Ok lets start talking w/a controversial topic!

Original post by Toucan311

Ok, so maybe its not really controversial, but I'm sure some of you have an opinion on it.

A girl that I work with is a hardcore athiest. She doesnt believe in God, Jesus, etc. She is NOT agnostic, she believes that there is just NOTHING. Which is totally fine; everyone is entitled to their own belief system. What drives me crazy about this? SHE CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS. Does this irk anyone else?

ok so there are 14 million jews and 2 billion christians basically - BIG difference

did you see the post on LIF about bringing your children to see Santa if you are Jewish? It was so interesting and I learned a lot about why people would choose NOT to do that

i just read that this girl is obnoxious in her not believing in jesus and she is a jesus/god basher and then celebrates christmas....i can see how that could bother you. that would bother me too...i dont impose my beliefs (or lack of beliefs ) on anybody....and i dont think im right or wrong about what i believe in.....i keep my beliefs to myself and i dont mind that other people believe in other things....i think its great actually - that everyone chooses to believe what they want.....i dont like when people badmouth other peoples beliefs....who cares what other people believe? if you dont like it than you dont have to believe in it!

Oh and I wanted to ask a question abot Christmas and the birth of Jesus.....was Jesus actually supposed to born on December 25? I thought that the date was made up? and if its made up - than that is pretty stupid to me JMO

i forgot to add that when we have children we are def celebrating Christmas and Santa - just because im not religious i dont think i should take away the spirit of the holidays and santa from my kids

I dunno... I think my issue w/this person in particular is that she's outspoken about being anti-religion and implies that ppl that do believe in something (christianity, judiasm, ANYTHING) are naive and stupid. Makes me want to shove a christmas tree right up her athiest a$$.

I would love it if you asked her why she celebrates something as 'ridiculous' as Christmas. Tell her she shouldnt celebrate ANY holidays. If you hate religion so much, dont use it to 'have a good time'. Cause you know she doesnt wanna be bored on Xmas sitting there cursing the stupidity of it while everyone is celebrating.

things are closed because MOST of the world celebrates it

i don't actually have any facts, but i'm pretty sure that's very untrue. i think much more of the world are Jewish than Catholic. Not sure, though. Does anyone have #s?

do you really think there are more Jewish people than christian

If you are looking at the aisles and aisles of santas, snowmen, reindeer and gingerbread men, then yes - you have a point. However, as a Catholic, I view these as 'winter' or 'seasonal' items, not 'Christmas'. A true symbol of Christmas to me is a nativity scene, not a penguin in a red hat.

The date that Jesus was born has never been confirmed. The early Christians chose Dec 25 bc it was near the Pagan celebration of the winter solstice so it would be easier to convert other Christians and to also hide their celebrations bc they could be killed for being Christian.

I'm pretty sure that early Christians just stuck Christmas on Dec 25 b/c there was already a Pagan holiday celebrated around that time. Its not his 'real' birthday.

Call it what you want, and I can't speak for all of us, but I doubt you'd find many non-christians of any denomination with santas, snowmen, reindeer and gingerbread men in their houses as decor during the winter.

Since all versions of the bible are translations it is usually hard to figure out specific dates times and places for important events. . . there are different ideas about when Jesus was born but most people do believe it was more in the spring time based on the presence of the star that led the wise men to Jesus and also the census that was called and the reason that Mary and Jesus were in Bethelehem

Okay sorry did I put you all to sleep? LOL

My friend in HS always had a Hanukah bush. What is that exactly? I've always been curious.
