We went to Alto for my birthday this year--amazing. (Brangelina was there last week) I took him to Gramercy Tavern for his two years ago--also amazing.
A couple other good suggestions:: The House 10 Downing Kingswood Blue Hill Perilla
Oooh, Perilla, I've been dying to go there but FH's palate is not very adventurous, he didn't like the menu. WANNA GOOOOOOO.

REDEYE GRILL!!!! omg...one of the best meals ive had -- lobster pot pie!! so yummy..and they have live jazz music on fri / sat nights.
not sure if they still do, but its an awesome place
o...and appetizer is 'dancing shrimp'...its basically just shrimp that is fried (i think in coconut) on a skewer thats stuck into a pineapple

Fh took me to dinner at Morton's Steak House the night he proposed... It we the best meal EVER. Their onion bread is enough reason to go! LOL

The Waters Edge has really great food. It is in Long Island City - right on the water, you can see the Manhattan skyline across the river and they offer a free ferry ride from the docks right outside the restaurant into manhattan. That is where we got engaged. He took me there on my birthday last year too! The food is AMAZING!
