Okay I have a question regarding bush and the debate?

I was on JetBlue watching the debate what a geek. Anyway While watching the debates I heard bush say We are having a vaccine shortage because of the contamination in england (or where ever we are getting) where we were suppose to get it. But We are going to look at Canada for some help. UMMMM But we can't get drugs imported here from Canada because Bush is afraid they will poison us?

I can't believe that after 90 minutes no one mentioned stem cell research - the most prominent proponent of stem cell research just passed away and it is not addressed in the debate? wow - i was really surprised.

Kerry kicked butt though.

The questions wasn't asked! I thougt a lot fo the questions were good but the flu vaccine question and the strong women question were just so limiting...but not to presidnet bush, he brought it back to education anyway!

Whenever Bush was backed into a corner last night, or just didn't know a way to respond he brought it back to education. He seemed flustered a great deal of the time. You can tell he got a great deal of coaching.

God Speed, John Kerry!

Don't be too surprised... last night's moderator is close personal friends with George W. Guess he just 'forgot' to mention that stem cell question...

I think there's a big difference between the gov't contracting a Canadian drug company to produce a specific vaccine to certain specifications vs. people randomly going online to buy whatever medication they want/need.

Who is to know for sure if medication you buy from getmeds.com is effective and not dangerous if it bypasses FDA regulations?

I can't believe that for some questions (like immigration and affirmative action) Bush turned it into an answer about education!

However I have to say once he started talking about Laura Bush - you can tell he's so devoted to her. I was sorta impressed by that. And he cracked some good jokes too about how she said to stop slumping and scowling

Well said....there is a huge difference b/w ppl going online randomly to buy drugs from unknown companies in Canada VS. contracting with one company to produce a vaccine.

The other problem Bush mentioned was that there is a HUGE need for medical liability reform - there are so many lawsuits out there that drug mfrs are afraid to produce these types of vaccines in the first place for fear of lawsuits, thus the shortage problem in the first place.

Actually that is untrue. The medical liability is about 1% of cost to the insured.
If your life is altered irrevocably due to the mistake of your physician you should be able to sue for compensation.

Example, my aunt went in for a routine surgery when she was 21 years old. They were removing a small malignancy in her thyroid. While under anesthesia,( the anesthesiologist was dividing his time between two operating rooms) my aunt lost oxygen to her brain for 5 minutes. Thus, altering her life forever. For the remainder of her life she was in a persistant vegetative state. Her life as we and she new it was over. She spent the rest of her life in a wheelchair, in a nursing home unable to speak or feed herself. She resembled that woman Terry Schiavo in Florida. If we were not able to sue the Doctor responsible for that mistake, we would never have been able to pay for her enormous healthcare costs. She recently passed away at the age of 45.

JMHO I don't mean to offend anyone, as this is an issue close to my heart. George W. Bush is pushing for this reform to help the Insurance Corporations, no one else.

ETA: Smiley...don't want anyone to think I meant this maliciously.

I am sorry about your Aunt and that is a very sad and terrible story as is Terry Schiavo's, and that is great that you were able to sue when it was the Dr's fault but I think there are many unnecessary lawsuits in the medical community that are increasingly becoming more financially burdensome. We as a society are becoming way too litigious - and there needs to be some good reform. Not to prevent malpractice cases as in the case of your Aunt but to prevent draining and unnecessary litigation.

I work for a legal publisher and we are developing a new product about this very issue - medical liability reform and the necessity to stop frivolous litigation. The number you quoted I believe is much higher than 1% of the total cost of HC and rising....

Thanks for the clarification...I too am aware of the many frivolous lawsuits, but I tend to get defensive about it due to the sore spot I have regarding my aunt.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Okay I have a question regarding bush and the debate?

There may be a need for some malpractice reform, but a major problem with rising insurance costs comes from the conglomeration of insurance companies. More and more insurance companies are combining, so there is less competition and rates are rising faster than the actual cost of health care. Personally, I am angry with Bush -- he has done NOTHING to address the growing costs of health care for the past four years. Now, his only answer is to pass laws to limit malpractice suits?? Come on, his answer is to take away our right to hold a doctor accountable for a life-altering mistake?? In KerrC's example, if they hadn't been able to sue the doctor what would have happened to her family?

Re: Okay I have a question regarding bush and the debate?

Yeah, ig et really scared when peopel talk about too much medical liability reform. Something has to eb done ebcause I know a lot of doctors cant afford to practice (my family doctor retired early for that reason..the insurance got too high), but I think aout that case and others, and there's SO much malpractice, i would be terrified to thinkof a world where you CAN'T sue these people.

There was a story on the enws a few years ago about a woman who had surgery and the surgeoun branded the name of his college or something ON HER UTERUS. I hink he should be in jail, but barring that, he should have t pay so much $$ that he can never afford to practice again

Re: Okay I have a question regarding bush and the debate?

I think the whole idea behind medical liability reform is to balance the lawsuits so that where there is a real case of malpractice or depraved action (like branding someones uterus- ugh ), yes then of course you should retain the right to sue... but its sad when drs cant practice because of the huge costs of insurance which is a result of a litigious society.
