I just got back from my hall and.......the 18% gratuity is just paying the salary so tip is not included
you mean $20 a waiter or waitress would be over $500 they said usually about 3-5$ pp for the maitre'd--- ummmmm $800 are you kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!insane! plus bar tenders and banquet manager huh?
i am in the wrong profession

Re: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think thats a little much, i was always told you should tip your lead waiter or waitress and $2-3 pp to the maitre'd. You don't have to tip the bartender or banquet manager if you don't want to.

Re: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That doesn't sound right to me...
I think they just want to hint at you to tip MORE than you really should...
I'm not tipping above the gratuity... except for the Maitre'D & BM & BA of course...

Yeah, it does add up - I think we put like $200 in an envelope for the waiters/waitresses. That was it though. We also did tip the bartender - I think we put $200 in an envelope for them (we had 2) - I didn't want them to 'solicate' tips from my guests. Highway robbery

Re: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've done catering before and we each got a part of the gratuity which was always enough to actually work the party. When they say it covers there salary that could mean that they get a set 75-100 bucks if not more as shift pay and then what ever tips they make on top of that. (thats about 15-20 bucks an hour) Dont get me wrong I always liked being tipped extra but these catering halls pay the waitors, waitresses and bartenders enough, no need for $800 in extra tips thats CRAZY!

Re: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that is what i was thinking..... yes i understand the matre'd and the banquet manager but come on..... i have done the same and never complained about the money we got........
i mean for me with $250 guests as a minimum for the matre'd that is $750 at $3 pp
that just seems insane

Re: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There nuts I never made that much money for 5-6 hours worth of work I just cant see giving $800 as a tip actually call me cheap but I cant see giving more than $150 for the maiterdee, they get paid from the catering hall.

Re: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maitre'ds actually don't get paid that much they only get paid per party and most of the money they make is from tips. Just something to think about when you are tipping them.

Re: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I see a few of you mentioning tipping the banquet manager, and if you want to that's fine, but you don't have to. They make a hefty commission from booking each party, you don't have to give them anything extra.

Re: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Personally... I think everything related to weddings is insane and overpriced in cost IMO. And I am realizing this more and more since this is totally coming out of my pocket (no help from either family).
And here begins my rant....
Photographers are the biggest rip-offs to start with. How much does it cost to actually print pictures? 50cents a pic? It kills me how much these photography studios dare to charge... and they don't even give you the damm negatives (most of the big studios). Then they will make you an 'album'. Damm... I can probably get the same album in Walmart for $20 buks. Yeah I know you are paying for the 'service'... but this is still a major rip-off if you ask me.
The florists are definitely up there in the rip-off level. How much does floral really cost these florists. Not much I am sure.
The cost of DJs definitely hits home. And I am a DJ! I can understand paying $600-800 for a DJ... Maybe $1000 if they include an Emcee. But IMO anyone spending over $1200 for a DJ might as well bend over and break out the vasoline. You aren't getting anything additional, compared to the DJ charging less unless your wedding falls on 12/31.
I haven't priced out videotography... but at least the video guys will edit the content for you. That takes at least half a brain to do.
The catering halls... I really don't see that as being as much a rip-off as these other items. Im paying $65 a head at the Swan Club for 50 people for a Saturday afternoon wedding in May, and even that price includes a ton of stuff (open bar 5hr, custom wedding cake, etc.). I think I got a pretty good deal. Plus I heard the Maitre-D usually gets $1-3 a head. For me thats $150 tops for him. He will more likely be getting $100. That to me is feisable. But yeah the 18% service charge is a rip.
Ok... thats enough of my rant for now. I'll rant some more if I feel the need. I should have just eloped.

Re: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I listened to the suggestions about what we should tip and then I decided what i thought was fair. You give what you think is reasonable.....what can they do? Kick you out of your own wedding becasue you didn't tip enough?

It just says more money to me because FH is freaking awesome at editing video. We hope to maybe be able to find a videographer who will also give us the raw footage in addition to their edit of the day.
