OMG!!

OMG!!

Okay, so yesterday I received 2 cards from people who can not make the wedding. Why did one of them include a check for $500??!!

The other person put a check in for $50 and last week someone gave us $75. I didn't know it was normal for people who declined to send money. I want to send them Thank you cards now. Also, when should we deposit the checks? Now or after the wedding. FH and I are still shocked. We planned on opening an special savings account for any money we received from the wedding, guess we have to do it a little sooner.

WOW very generous. I say deposit and send thank yous right away. You want these people to know now how much you appreciate their thoughtfulness

Re: OMG!!

Look at when they are dated? I think I deposited them as soon as I got them if they were dated now. If not dated till the wedding then wait.

I sent thank yous to people before But then I also sent a formal thank you when we got our thank yous back.

Wow!! That's extremely generous of your guest!!!! I've never knew that you should send a gift when you can't attend a wedding - I have learned that since being an LIW member. lol I have quite a few people who declined - hopefully they'll send something even a 1/8 as nice as the check you got!

I received a check from one of my dad's friends who I was originally going to invite.... then after I received the check, we called them and explained why we didn't originally invite them - and then I send them an invite after our conversation.

Definately send a thank you card now - then if you have pictures made, send them another. What they sent you more then covers the cost of a card and picture.

I'm not going to deposit any checks until after the wedding. Only 4 weeks to go, so we can wait - and we don't need the money right now anyway.

I would say open an account in the next couple weeks and deposit it just so you dont' lose it. lol

Okay, thanks for the advice. They all were dated in May, so I guess FH and I will deposit them now.

I am to send them thank you cards now and the formal ones later. I'm still shocked about the $500 check. SHe even wrote a long letter explaining why she can't come.

That was nice of them. I would send a thank you now & then another thank you when you send out the rest w/ the picture. Also I think you should deposit the checks sooner rather than later. I hate when people don't cash my checks & my account says one thing even though I know there is an outstanding check. I just think it is rude to the person that sent you the check. JMO and maybe one of my pet peeves.

Thanks. I too hate it when people take a long time to cash checks. The only thing FH and I were wondering about was if we should wait until after the wedding to deposit the check since it is a wedding gift. But, I decided to deposit it on Monday!

How can you keep someone's check without depositing it for 4 weeks??? I really can't think of anything more annoying or unappreciative to hold a check for a month.

We were unsure if we should deposit it because it's a wedding gift and the wedding didn't occur yet. It's like if someone mailed us a wrapped gift, we wouldn't open it till after the wedding. But FH and I both like to have a balanced checkbook and we prefer for people to cash checks that we write quickly too.
Actually thinking about it, all I had to do was look at the date on the check. I guess if they wanted me to wait to cash it they would have dated it July 3, 2005.
I'm soo exciteddd!!!

It's so nice that some people are that generous. I always send a gift if I am declining because I am sure the couple could use the money now rather than later.

Very simple - the check is dated for June 2005 with an opening to put the actual day in.

So easy on the comments about being annoying or unappreciative since they GAVE US the choice to deposit it, but not UNTIL June.

Re: OMG!!

That was very generous and also the RIGHT thing to do.....
When I am unable to attend a wedding, I always send a gift...

I would send a Thank you right now,,,and when you send out your picture thank you's you can send them one also...

That's a very generous gift. Us too got a few checks from those who cannot attend. It is the right thing to do. I always send a gift when I can't attend. Of course, our checks were more in the $50 range, but $500 is awesome.

My mom works for a bank and told me that FH and I should open a joint bank account now. She says that a lot of newly married couples have trouble cashing their wedding checks because lots of times the checks are made out to Mr. & Mrs. She also told me to return to the same bank I opened our account in to cash the wedding gifts as they will probably remember you. I thought that FH would at least be able to cash them, but she said no. The only way would be if a teller let it slip by. Then you could easly change your name on the account afterwards.

Re: OMG!!

That is very generous - IMO you should open an account and deposit the money so you don't screw up the people's bank accounts - and send thank yous right away..........
