The contractor who started construction on my mom's house 2 years ago is still not finished. He has informed me it will not be finished for my wedding. I don't know why he is doing this to us, (he sends one guy once a week and when my mom calls to say that it is not acceptable he doesn't send him at all and knows full well about my wedding.) I hate feeling threatened by someone who is using my wedding as leverage. what kills me is, he tell us that he has other jobs. As if we are supposed to care after 2 years!!! (3 months maybe but 2 years!!!) We have been living in a mess for two years and the pictures at my mom's house are now limited, if even possible.
They have not done what they were supposed to do and what they did do, has been done poorly. My mom's contract called for a wood floor and he laid pergo. 3 months of arguing with him that it is not the same (yes, we had to explain to him that it is not the same) and he finally installed the floor 2 weeks ago. (small progress) but now, the house is not painted or sanded (we paid him for that) and I have been trying to paint over unsanded spackle which comes out lumpy. It looks terrible.
I am frantically trying to get small sections in order for my pictures. What kills me is, he can totally do this. There is no consequence for him not too- he has no ethical liability to do good work or to finish in a reasonable amount of time. There is no county office that monitors this; I mean at one point, he didn't show up for 3 months straight! I am just so disgusted right now. Plus I am home sick today, with a throat infection and can't do too much except let this plague me...I am so angry and devasted..
Thanks for listening, sorry so long.

Re: On the verge of tears
I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this. 2 years in UNEXCUSABLE! Have you called the news? 7 on your side, or Help me Howard? There is actually a show on the Home and Garden network I think called Holmes on Homes, where he comes in fixes messes that other contracters have left unfinished. Might be worth a shot....
call the attorney general's office of consumer rights!!!! 2 years is absurd...

Re: On the verge of tears
Thanks, we actually sought legal advice from a friend of the family and we were instructed to get as much out of the contractor as possible because there is really no liability for them even if we went to court. But I think that contacting the attorney general is a great idea. Thanks.

Sorry to hear you are dealing with this piece of cr*p...there is absolutely no excuse for this! I guess he's just some private contractor? Do you know if he's licensed? Go on this site to see if he's licensed to do business: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/. If he is report him to BBB.

Thanks for posting. He is licensed and insured and has been in business for over 25 years. So we figured how bad could he be? He was even referred to us by a friend who raved about him, I referred him to my FMIL since he was really great to deal with in the begining, but their relationships with him has since soured as well. He just goes around telling people what they want to hear and does whatever he wants without any regard for the fact that our home has been turned upside down for 2 years! Plus he is a little sneaky. I mean our contract says 'install wood floors' and he put pergo. As if we weren't going to know???? I mean he is just really conniving.
I have to wait until the work is done to file any and all complaints. If he gets wind of the complaints now, he won't finish and then we are out the money.

Yes, if and after he ever finishes, then you should definitely report him. And, I agree, report him to the Attorney General. Oh yes, he's shrewd...Pergo! My FH used to install wood floors and trust me, he didn't use Pergo. I guess he was paid all of his money then? I don't blame you for wanting to wait to take further action. Maybe try and pressure him a little more to at least finish a certain area of the house so you have somewhere to take pictures. I feel for you...good luck!

Honestly, I can't wait to report him. We had to pay in certain intervals. So right now, we owe him one more payment, which I will not remit until the job is completed to my satisfaction, but again, I can't tell him that because he will just not come back. I would still have to have a lot of the work done, so I don't make out in the deal, I probably lose money. I would have to hire someone else to finish.
Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it.

Sorry, I don't have any better advice for you. Oh, I definitely wouldn't pay him any more until he finishes and I think you can and should make that clear to him. Is this guy stupid too! A lot of work comes through referrals in that business. If this is how he does business, does he actually think people will speak well of him and recommend him? Unless somehow he really does have that much work that he doesn't care.

LOL, I would rather contact Bed Bath and Beyond. It is much more fun there and I think a nice shopping spree would be fun. Thanks for putting a smile on my face.

I am sorry you have to go thru this. You should fire his A$$ and get someone else in there to finish. Then sue the pants off of him. Thats no way to do business.

What were the terms in the contract? You may want to look into getting a lawyer for this as it has been long enough!
Goodluck!
