Ok I'll tell you the story of my Mimacat.

I had wanted a cat, and I went to petco and saw cats in the cage in the front... so I tried to adopt one, but they make you go through a long a$$ waiting period, and I decided to rescute a kitty from the pound instead. So I went down to Islip Animal Shelter and looked at all the kitties. They were all meowing and trying to get my attention, and there's little Mima. Laying in her cage, with a little cough. I picked her up (I wasnt supposed to, but I did) and she was so sweet and calm. Little did I know this was b/c she was near death! Anyhow, they told me that her 'cough' was a 'hairball' and so I paid my $30 and took her. Aw little Mima!

I brought her to my vet for her checkup, and he informed me that her 'hairball' was actually Croup, which is common in shelter cats. She had an antibiotic and I took her home, but poor little Mima continued to cough and have some difficulty breathing. It almost looked like she was trying to cough something up.

One morning right before I was about to leave for school I noticed that she was having a lot of trouble breathing, so I rushed her to the vet. She almost didnt make it. She had to be put out and intibated (sp) and the checked her for obstructions. Then I had to rush her to the cat EMERGENCY room, where she had to be on Oxygen for 24 hours! Turns out her croup exacerbated her apparant asthma, and she had a near fatal asthmatic crisis!! This is very rare in cats, I'm told. Originally they gave me an inhaler, but she did NOT want to partake in that, so now she gets a pill daily (prednisone) She's an indoor cat, so she can be active in the house. So far she's only had a few minor breating issues, but I give her a pill and shes much better.

Everyone thinks I'm nutty b/c I only had her a week when she had all of these problems, and I shelled out well over 3k to fix her, but I think when you get a pet you make a committment to them! How could I justify blowing money on pocketbooks and vacations if I wasn't willing to pay for my pet? Anyhow, little Mima is doing well now, and she's fat and truely thinks I'm her mother. FYI, she HATES FH w/a passion.

aw that is a sweet story... I also am a VERY strong believer in once you bring a pet into your home they are your responsibility. My Persian cat ruined a brand new couch in my apartment because she decided she didn't like cat litter. We had to throw it out because there is NO getting cat pee out of anything. Everyone says I should get rid of her but I would never! I adopted her and shes my responsibility no matter what ! lol

WOW, Heather! You're a good person! You saved Mima's life. I just learned alot more than 'One thing about you...'

Your kitty is lucky to have you and I'm sure she appreciates it.

She hates FH??? She's probably just jealous like the rest of the b*tches on here!

I've never had cats...we've always had dogs growing up...I have 2 now...they are my babies...they go everywhere with us...they even get more of the bed than I do...lol

We lost Bailey last July...our beagle pup...she was only 9 years old...woke up one day..she wouldn't eat...threw up...gums got white...all in the matter of hours...took her to the vet...she was in the hospital for 4 days when she died spent just over $8K to save her...she had this rare disease IMHA...I still miss her...and still paying off the vet bills...it doesn't matter how long you have your pet...a week or 9 years...they are your family...you do whatever you have to do to help them...they can't help themselves.

I know. its worse with dogs! I have two dogs also, a German Shephard and a Norwegian Elkhound. Yes, I live in a kennel We had another German Shephard who we had to put down about 2 years ago b/c she had a disease called degenerative myelopathy, which is like MS but for dogs. She eventually lost all control of her back legs and internal organs. It was AWFUL, horrible. I cried for months before we put her down, and I held her the whole time while they did it b/c I didnt want her to be scared! I love my animals more than I like most people!

OMG - that is so sad, but that was so awesome of you. And so great that it's a problem that can ultimately be taken care of by a little pill.

My FH is honestly the biggest animal lover ever and loves every single creature. We have two cats and two dogs - one of our cats was adopted from petco exactly like you said and the other FH found in his backyard as a little kitten. The one at petco has actually turned out to be a big problem - the cat is feral (sp?) and he won't let either of us near him. We had to get him declawed, which FH is adamantly opposed to, because he almost took out one of our pugs' eyes. Even though the cat is not pleasant to be around, FH refuses to give him away or put him down because of exactly what you said - he made a committment when he got him.

Our little pug Pee-Bee (of our duo Pee-Bee and Jay - play on PB&J/Peanut Butter and Jelly) got VIOLENTLY sick once. We give them frontline but we ran out so we brought the OTC stuff they sell at Petco. Big mistake - he almost died from it. He started horribly itching one night and it got worse and worse until all his skin turned red and swollen. His underbelly swelled so bad it was hanging like a cow's udder. He had to go to the emergency animal hospital and stay over night - this all cost us a few grand too. He ended up surviving it and if I had to do it over again I woudl still spend the money because I love my dogs!!!!!!!!

Its amazing what we do for our animals!! Supposedly if you force attention on a feral cat it will eventually come around. Mima is pretty social so my vet figures she was a house cat and the ppl were aware of her asthma and didnt want to deal with it. My kittens I've had since they were 3 weeks old. I had to bottle feed them! So they're also very social. I hope your cat comes around!

We've really tried everything - nothing works.

FH used to live in an apartment that had a small walk in closet but he didn't store anything in it. He used to trap the cat in there and try to spend time with him thinking he'd eventually come around since there was nowhere to hide, but it never worked. He used to let us get close enough to him to pick him up, because before we declawed him I picked him up once and he went ape shitt and scratched me everywhere. Since then we can't even get close enough to touch him before he runs away. Our vet is trying to convince us to put him on kittie anti-depressants, and we're thinking about it but I don't know it just sounds a little wacky.

hey, if it works i'd try it! Youre going to have to live, like, fifteen years w/the cat! May as well try and make it palatable. Poor feral cats. Makes you wonder what happened to them in the wild before you get them! How is he w/your other cat?

It's funny b/c FH found the other cat (Mooch) in the backyard. But, I think that cat was born from two cats who are indoor/outdoor cats. The way the feral cat (Nico) acts, it seems like he was born in a f-ing jungle!!!!

It's funny because the two cats love each other and they sleep all snuggled up all the time. AND, the only time you can pet Nico is if he is snuggled with Mooch. Literally, if they are snuggled up Nico does not even flinch when you put him. But, if he is by himself, you can't even get close to him without him hissing at you like a madman.

And, Nico HATES the dogs with a passion. The dogs are SO friendly and they LOVE Mooch so they completely don't understand why Nico hates them. Actually, the other night one of the dogs tried to get into a game of chase with him, but he jumped on the table and stood there hissing like crazy until my dog actually started crying - like W T F cat, I just want to hang out with you!

LOL aw poor Nico has a screw loose! At least he has a friend in Mooch. I dont know WHAT makes cats feral, I'm really not well read on cat origins. I hope you're able to soothe him in some way!
