I believe we're having wine and beer...which to me seems unnecessary but nice (but I'm not the one paying, so I'll shut up and be happy about it)!
I told my FMIL that I wanted a lamb on a spit in the front yard. She told me that it would have to be in the parking lot of the restaurant!

Re: OPEN BAR AT REHEARSAL DINNER ?????????
We did - my sil hosted it and she wanted a open bar and we got it. Honestly we had a blast, we sang and drank and ate. It was like a big party and not some stuffy rd that people get bored to death with. The only problem we did have is when I handed out presents no one cared and when I tried to say something it had to be quick otherwise I would get talked over.
I think it depends on your family and the people going to this and of course who is hosting it. My SIL was acting as mother of the groom for my dh since she raised him most of his life. His side is a big irish/scottish drinking family so it suited us. My family was a bit more shocked because they are traditional but in the end they had a blast.

Re: OPEN BAR AT REHEARSAL DINNER ?????????
We started a tab and paid for it at the end since not many people were drinking. We paid for beer and wine but if they wanted a mixed drink we asked that the waitress have them pay for it because some places a martini can be 10 bucks Talk to whomever is running your dinner, the place we went to gave us a great deal!!!

we paid by the drink; it was cheaper than paying the extra $15 pp because people really didn't drink that much.
a lot of times it works out cheaper this way. so i guess it was open bar in that sense; DH and I just ran a tab for the drinks that we paid for at the end.
i think thats how ours was too, not sure.
But dh wanted this since he drinks scotch and most his friends drink that or some other hard liquor. Ours was also 2 days before the wedding not the night before so didnt have to worry about ppl drinking the night before

Re: OPEN BAR AT REHEARSAL DINNER ?????????
We were going to have an open bar but our RD was on a Thursday night and the restaurant suggested that it was not worth it. They said that most people won't really drink that much and it would probably be cheaper to just pay for whatever drinks the guest order. They were right because less than half the guests drank and they only had a drink or two.

Re: OPEN BAR AT REHEARSAL DINNER ?????????
We did. We wouldn't have had it any different. We paid for the RD and looked until we found a place that had an entire package we could afford. I would never ask my guests to pay for their own alcohol, that's just me.

Re: OPEN BAR AT REHEARSAL DINNER ?????????
What I think we are going to do is have the bar run a tab which we will settle after the fact. Soda and coffee is included and I don't think everyone is going to drink alcohol. We figure it will probably be cheaper to run the separate tab rather than pay an extra $16 pp when some people won't have any alcohol at all.

Beer and wine - we debated open bar but I didnt think it was necessary
