Over the weekend we received a shower gift from FMIL. We live in san Diego and so she mailed it to us since my shower is in NY in a couple of weeks. We opened the gift, is that ok? We called her to thank her and she said 'you didn't open it right? You shouldn't open it until after the shower.' What is the etiquette for receiving shower gifts in the mail? BTW, my shower is not a surprise.

Open it up! I opened gifts that I rec'd before my shower..hey..I had already mailed my invites so I wasn't even sure if they were wedding or shower gifts!!!

I don't know what is right or wrong...I got in trouble for using some of our e-gifts. I was told they are for after the wedding (gifts for our new life together). I think it is fine to open it before the shower or you could bring it to the shower to open.?! Do what you want, that is all that matters.

Hey Karen...funny that you ask this. We just got our first gift the other day and don't even know if it's a wedding gift, engagement gift (??) or what. We opened it and will probably send a thank you once we can actually get in the car and drive somewhere that sells them. Our other issue was whether to send a thank you now or wait, because we are getting nice photo TYs from our photographer. Decisions, decisions...
