Opening the envelopes after the Reception is over:
Original post by SeptBride70
I was wondering what everyone has done or is going to do about this?
Meaning, are you and your DH going to do it together or do you think you will do it with family (either FIL's or parents)...
Girls who are married: what did you do and any bad/good experiences with that way?
Girls who are not yet married: what do you plan on doing?
TIA!!! I'm debating having everyone there just incase people don't give as much as FIL's or my parents 'expect' them to and then it might create bad feelings... anyone have a similar problem?

We opened them alone. They were not gifts for our families so it was not their business. My mother knew not to ask who gave what. IMO, it is tacky to ask - parent or not. We stashed our checks after we divided them and cashed them when we got home from Hawaii.
Well said...I can't even imagine why anyone else should ask or care, its a gift for you not your parents or anyone else. IMO I think its tacky for may one ask how much someone gave you..even parents. I know my parents or FILs would never even dream of asking.
My thoughts exactly, can't even imagine.

Re: Opening the envelopes after the Reception is over:
after reading what everyone said (i can't agree more!) i spoke w/ FH and he said we will open some of our e-party gifts (meaning boxes of things from our registry) in front of people after the party is over (whoever stays) and we will take care of just envelopes later when we are alone or the next day. with the wedding we decided it would be best to wait until the next day and not even say anything to the IL's about it and take care of it ourselves and if they ask FH will speak to them about how it is our business b/c i dont need fmil's comments about who did or did not give what they should have-- it's just not an important part of our wedding and i know it will turn into a mess if she has any info on who gave what. it will esp hurt my feelings if she starts to say anything about MY family and close friends (meaning if she feels they didn't give 'enough')... so FH and I were happy to make our final decision last night to keep it between us! phew, it might cause some waves (b/c i know how fmil is) but oh well, she will have to get over it...

We did it by ourselves, we didn't think it was anyone else's business.

I agree
ditto ditto
the last thing i want is my mother stating 'but you got XYZ for the wedding, why are you broke?'
UGH! I HATE that! we got that now already. 'Oh, you're buying a house AND paying for a wedding..you must have, blah blah blah' So what, big deal!!! We have busted our butts to save and I sold my house to help have all of this. It's totally OUR business. I hate when family gets involved with money.... they just don't mix.

We will open them alone after the wedding, hopefully that night. I think that will be so exciting.

I totally agree. DH and I did it alone that night.
Those are gifts given to you and DH so I don't see why anyone else would feel that it is there place to be that involved.
