Opening the envelopes after the Reception is over:

Original post by SeptBride70

I was wondering what everyone has done or is going to do about this?

Meaning, are you and your DH going to do it together or do you think you will do it with family (either FIL's or parents)...

Girls who are married: what did you do and any bad/good experiences with that way?

Girls who are not yet married: what do you plan on doing?

TIA!!! I'm debating having everyone there just incase people don't give as much as FIL's or my parents 'expect' them to and then it might create bad feelings... anyone have a similar problem?

Either FI and I will do it alone the next day OR FI and I might go to my parents house and open them together the next day

We are going to do it the next day, just me and FH/. IMO, it is no one's business what people give, that is not the point of the wedding

i agree.

i think you should take the envelopes with you after the reception...and don't even MENTION them to your IL's. i mean it's not like they are going to be following you around every waking minute the day after the wedding?

if you truly feel they will hound you--i say take them with you to the hotel or wherever you and FH will be staying the night of the wedding---and you two open them together that very next morning. if the IL's have something to say--just tell them you wanted to get it over with, and did it alone.

DH and I did it that night when we got back to the hotel. We sat at the little dinette table in our room, took a stack each and opened them one at a time, told each other what we got, wrote how much the person gave on the back of the card and put cash in one envelope and checks in another. I wouldn't do it with anyone there. You don't need other peoples comments. These are your gifts and nobody elses. Our parents asked for lists of their families a few weeks later to use for future reference when they attend events and that was fine by us. It wasn't my moms business what my dad or DH's family gave us, we didn't want to hear any comments!! But I'll tell ya this, it was sooo fun counting all the money with DH that night and then hitting the total button...our mouths dropped!!!

We opened them alone. They were not gifts for our families so it was not their business. My mother knew not to ask who gave what. IMO, it is tacky to ask - parent or not. We stashed our checks after we divided them and cashed them when we got home from Hawaii.

we will open them the next day, just the two of us.

I think we'll do the same

I did it with just DH --- some how I think it would be weird to do it with someone else there. If it were gifts that would be different.

once you do it be sure to have a notebook so you can name a note of who gave you a gift. It is really easy to be disorganized about this.

FH & I will be opening them up alone, either the next day or after we get back from our HM. We are not sure yet, but whenever we decide to do it, it will be done alone.

Dh and I opened them in our hotel room after the reception just to read all the nice things people wrote. The next day we really went through them back at our apartment.

Re: Opening the envelopes after the Reception is over:

yeah i definitely agree with all of you so much that they are our gifts and that it's no one's business! and all very good points-- that's what made me worry and wonder about this in the first place...

it was BECAUSE i feel that way and my FIL's don't that it made me wonder what is the norm.

i will definitely wait until the next day or day after that to open them depending on how busy we are but i know that they are going to AT LEAST ask about their guests...

i mean, since it's their guests do they have a right to know? FMIL keeps saying that if she doesn't get back what she gave to other people's kids when they got married she will have FFIL call them up and blah blah!! and it just embarrasses me b/c i don't want those people to think i was like 'hey FMIL, so and so only gave us this' you know? that's why i'm worried and i'm dreading the e-party now that it think about it b/c thats more of a 'open in front of everyone' event and they'll know everything.

what can you do really?

for my e-party my Fil's came over a week after - and me and FH opened the envelopes in front of my parents and his parents.

It went good - its just weird - bc its kinda like your comparing families - but, in all honestly, all the parents are concerned is that we get back what they gave in the past to their relatives. ..

Francesca that is the most Italian thing I've heard of all day I love it!

We will be opening them alone after the wedding. I am the last and baby of my cousins to get married, so my parents aren't looking out of what to get the next one, because I'm the last of this generation.

They might ask or get nosey..but my parents are pretty good about these things...

oh that's too funny b/c FIL's are italian and that would be exactly what they would want: us to open them in front of them later on when no one else is around with my parents there too!!

We opened them on our own.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you do NOT open your envelopes in front of anyone else.

We opened them the next day and my mil was there, she is not at all judgemental she just helped keep track of everything for the thank yous. We wanted to make sure that we were sober and home so we would not lose anything. I did have family members (my dad, Fil, and my brothers) ask how much money we received, we gave a ball park figure.

we left for our honeymoon the morning after the wedding, so we sent all the envelopes and gifts home with my parents. a week later, after the honeymoon, my parents picked us up at the airport, we went back to their house where the envelopes were, and we opened them then- just us and my parents.
the only thing my parents cared about was what my aunts and uncles gave us, so that my parents know what to give their kids when they get married.... other than that, it was nobodys business, no snobby comments were made, and everything was good

We did the exact same thing. It worked out well. We did tell my dad what two of his friends gave us because we were astonished at how generous they were.
