Opening the envelopes after the Reception is over:

Original post by SeptBride70

I was wondering what everyone has done or is going to do about this?

Meaning, are you and your DH going to do it together or do you think you will do it with family (either FIL's or parents)...

Girls who are married: what did you do and any bad/good experiences with that way?

Girls who are not yet married: what do you plan on doing?

TIA!!! I'm debating having everyone there just incase people don't give as much as FIL's or my parents 'expect' them to and then it might create bad feelings... anyone have a similar problem?

We went back to my parents' house after the reception before heading to the Garden City Hotel. DH passed out on the couch from exhaustion so I opened the envelopes. I opened them in front of my parents b/c I really didn't care. DH and I then signed the checks. We were leaving for our HM the next day, but wanted to deposit the checks before we left. My dad took care of depositing the checks for us. I highly doubt that FIL or MIL ever asked DH what we received as gifts.

We are going to do it the next day, just me and FH/. IMO, it is no one's business what people give, that is not the point of the wedding

I agree

I'm sure it will end of either being me doing it alone or the husband doing it with me... days after the wedding. We are taking a mini honeymoon over that wkend, so whomever gave what will be known by no one else.

FH and I will probably do it togehter just us the next day. I agree it is no ones business what people gave you and the wedding is about the 2 of you not the money.

My aunt is making a silk 'envelope bag' and we will take it home and open it and the envelopes later that night or the next day before heading off to our honeymoon!

We have assigned the Best Man to watch over the bag (which will be on the table next to ours) so that it doesnt disappear!!!!

We are opening ours the day after, before we leave for our honeymoon.....so at least we can get to the bank before we leave......reason being some people like there checks cashed asap ya know so we will do it before because of that.

Of course only two of us since we are the one who pays for almost 95% of the wedding cost!!!

I think we are going to do it that night by ourselves, our wedding is during the day so I am sure we wont be back too late.

'that they were in the room with his parents and her parents opening all the envelopes with MOH too...'

My parents and My In-Laws will NOT be coming back to my hotel room on my wedding night!! Oh my Gawd! Just the thought!

My DH and I will open our gifts alone.

DITTO! I'm not giving up a minute of my wedding night with FH for anyone or anything.
FH and I will open them together the next day.

We opened them alone. They were not gifts for our families so it was not their business. My mother knew not to ask who gave what. IMO, it is tacky to ask - parent or not. We stashed our checks after we divided them and cashed them when we got home from Hawaii.

Well said...I can't even imagine why anyone else should ask or care, its a gift for you not your parents or anyone else. IMO I think its tacky for may one ask how much someone gave you..even parents. I know my parents or FILs would never even dream of asking.

I hope your BM doesn't plan on leaving the table all night. Our catering hall has a safe for us to put the envelopes in and we create the combination that night.
