Opinions: to register for fine china or not?

Original post by Bella Laney

I'm completing my registry and am not sure whether or not I want to register for fine china. I'm hoping for some opinions.
Here's what I'm thinking:
On one hand, I think I should not register for china because it is so expensive and if people get me china my FH and I are more likely than not going to have to purchase many of the other things on our own. In addition, I'm not sure how much I will use the china.
On the other hand, I think registering for china now would be a smart idea because this is really the only time in my life I can ask for china and get it. Plus, it would be nice to have a beautiful set of plates (I love Opal Innocence).
What did you decide to do and why?

i registered for two sets...one for everyday use, which is nice...the other which is more $$...

i got almost everything from the everyday use but no one purchased any of the more $$ china...oh well...

which is fine. i wouldn't want to get some and then have to purchase the rest myself...maybe one day...!!

here is the big thing: ARE YOU GOING TO USE IT?

If you are then get it if not then don't. Your mind will change and your taste will change so why bother to get it then hate it in five years and you have only used it once.

I didnt understand the idea of fine china before getting engaged. I also didnt think it would be something I'd use. But after debating with FH and his family and then my mom, I decided that its tradition and eventually I'll use it. I love the idea of entertaining and hopefully in a few years time I'll be such a great cook that I will want to serve on my china when I host Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.

I have to learn to cook first, of course.

I also think my china is beautiful and wouldnt mind eating on it the first night in our new place.

I say do it. China is expensive and you will never buy it for yourself. This is the time to register for it and have people get it for you.

I have really started to love entertaining friends and family. I love my everyday plates but I'm sure I will get use out of the China. Originally, I was thinking, I work holidays, I'm not going ot host a Thanksgiving Day Dinner anytime soon so what's the point? So that was why I had taken the china off my registery. I'm glad my MOH and her mother decided to buy a few place settings because I really loved the china. And there are plenty of other times I will use it. But if you don't think you will use it, than I don't suggest getting it. or at least try to find one that isn't so expensive.

I didn't put China on my registry because my mother bought my fine china. Everyone was asking where my china was, so I has to explain that my mom bought it for us.

I would put it on there, just because if you don't like it or want it you can return and get credit to buy something else.

My mom is the best cook/bak entertainer there is and I am Hopeless. i only registered for china because i plan on doing whatever it takes to learn from the best! i really want to one day be HALF as good as her. I cant see myself inviting our friends for dinner and using those dishes today but one day I will want to and wih kids (God willing) and a mortgage there is no way i will drop that kind of money on plates for myself. Now is the time to get them because I have HUGE european family who will be more than happy to buy them for us and that is a wonderful thing that I greatly appreciate.

It really depends on what your lifestyle is or will be. I like to entertain and throw dinner parties and holiday dinners, so I break out the good china and silver and crystal about 3-4x a year. (I was married before so I have my china and I did receive most of it at my first shower) the rest was gifted from my mom at christmas. I do know a few women who did not receive any china at their shower.

If you envision living more casually then beautiful white dishes would look very modern and you can change your tablescape with different color tablecloths and napkins, centerpieces ect. silver candlesticks, glass candlesticks ect. With white you can mix and match more on the serving pieces as well. I love Crate and Barrel.

Ive been going through the same debate too. I figured that we always have holidays at my parents house and they have a set, but I know once they move they will probably just give it to me anyway so I can start to have the family holiday dinners

I didn't want to register for china because I thought it was too expensive, and I wasn't sure if we were going to use it. After thinking about it, we decided to register for it. We do entertain a lot (which may not be the situation you are in), and it would be good to have, even if we don't use it this year or next year. Also, because we already lived together, and had much of the regular stuff that couples get when they register, we thought it would be good to register for something that we don't have and that we wouldn't buy for ourselves. We registered for it just before our e-party, and we already have six place settings. I also think that people like to get that as a gift because it is something you use for a lifetime.

I wasnt sure, but then we found a pattern we really liked! We got everything we registered for (12 place settings, 12 accent plates, 12 soup bowls, 6 multipurpose bowls, 1 platter, 2 open veg bowls, sugar and creamer). our set didn't have as many pieces as others (we registered for everything but coffee pot and mugs) but we want to try to use it!

we've already used it maybe 2-3 times. i dont think we'll need the full set of 12, but it's nice to have just in case. I think we'll use it more now that we got a piece of furniture to keep them in (right now they are in protector cases in the corner of our apt next to the couch, with a beanbag chair draped over them to keep the cats off)

in the end, if you think you want it, register for it! you can always return it and buy something else if you register at BBB.

I'd register for it only if you found a pattern you love. Don't register for it just for the sake of registering.

I'm not - FH and I are living in an apartment and will probably live in an apt or co-op for a long time, a house is just too much work for us to take care of - so we don't really have the space for more dishes!

i never know what my life will be like in the future so i guess it doesn't hurt to register for a nice set of china. we can buy ordinary things ourselves, this is the one time we'll get to have other people splurge on us!

WE registered for in between fine china. Ours is $79 a place setting instead of $150. THis way we feel like we are getting fine china but it is not as pricey as some.

This was the question that I had two years ago! I fell in love with opal innocence china and It was just something I had to have!!! The holidays are very important to us and we love to entertain. I have alot of years ahead of me and I know as soon as we get our house we willh be using them for all occasions, anniversarys, thanksgiving, birthdays, family get togethers and I would have them to be seen in my china curio. I would also like to have my dining room always set. I was wondering who was going to buy me 12 sets of china plus lenox utensils...but they were all purchased and I love them. Plus its always something I will have and pass on. MIL got them for me Everytime I use them I will think of her.
