i'm chock full of questions today...if you had a good paying job but you disliked it, would you be willing to give that up for a lower paying job that you could tolerate?

i was stuck at a horribly miserable job for 5 years. i promised myself i would never deal with anything like that ever again.
i always tell FH that i would rather live with him in a cardboard box then be miserable.

I actually did! I took an $8K pay cut and left my old job (retail finance) for something more catered towards my degree (social work)! Good thing I did anyway, the company I used to work for went out of business 3 months later!

i think it depends how much less $....and HOW MISERABLE you are...
and it depends your current situation. like how much $ you owe, bills, mortgages....

I would think that if I was really miserable I would definitely leave. I guess it depends on the circumstances.

Its funny, because this is exactly what I'll be doing next year when I go back to school for my PhD - giving up a good paying job to try and achieve my career goals i.e. happiness.

In the way you phrased this question...I'd go with the money. Less money just to 'tolerate' my job wouldn't equate to happiness. However, if your question is more along the lines of making less money and doing something that I truely loved to do, then I'd definitley take the pay cut.

I already have... i used to have a job working for a investment bank in nyc, i used to put in 11 hour days at the least and travel all the time... i was always miserable. i now work a regular 8 hour day and make less but at least i have work/life balance.
